TOO BIG LAUNDRY ROOM: how to use it more effectively?

What would you do if your laundry room was too big? The room plan is in the picture. We were thinking if we could (also) transform half of the room into something else, maybe small gym corner or something but the room is a square so we are not sure. Any idea?

It’s not clear what the dimensions are. 13’ x ?

What other rooms are nearby? Will this room be near the family entry to the house so you could use closet space for winter coats and boots? Near the kitchen so a deep freeze or extra fridge would be handy? Is someone in the house proficient with a sewing machine and a sewing center with ironing board would be nice? Or a crafter or scrapbooker or artist or quilter?

Where in the house are cleaning supplies (vacuum/mops) stored? Extra paper goods like paper towels and toilet paper? Large economy size bags of dog food? Dog/cat beds and the litter box? Luggage? Christmas decorations? Insulated coolers and picnic supplies?

For sure use it for extra storage and have it all done in the construction. Combine a mudroom, laundry, storage...think seasonal for storage.

I have used containers much bigger than this, and, with care about moisture levels, have not had problems. Since I wanted to be able to use the containers for other things later, I did not put any drainage holes in the big containers. Instead, I would dig down every few weeks and make sure that I did not have a wet mess at the bottom. If it was too wet at the bottom, I got a pitch fork and brought the bottom material up to the top to dry a bit. I like the bigger containers because it was easier to keep a fairly uniform moisture level, even with the chore of checking the bottom. How big is too big...searching for the right sized shower

SO glad to find this post! I'm really struggling; didn't catch this on the plan or I would have changed it. We've framed: - a 4' wide, 9.5' long walk-in shower - on each end is doorless opening of 2' wide - there is a 5.5' to-ceiling panel betwn the openings * on the side of this "wall" facing into the main area of bathrm I will do some sort of glass tile and the tub will be there, forming a "T" with the shower itself. So I have a rectangle that's much too long, and am concerned about showerhead placement. DH thinks if I put a showerhead on each end, there will be water splashing out the 2' walk-in. Independent of the decision, we'll likely install Kohler 8030 in-ceiling rainshower panel (I've heard great things from users) in center of shower. But if that's the ONLY showerhead, you're walking to either end to get shampoo, etc. from inset shelves! FYI, I've always planned to put a basic handheld mounted on the 5.5' center wall, facing the back, of course. I know I'm over-explaining, and I apologize, but I REALLY don't want shower doors and DH is convinced that's the only way I can mount a showerhead on each end of shower, since we didn't plan ahead and at least have a 5-8" piece come in from corner of shower before the 2' walk-in. Does anyone have any experience w/a shower this large, or advice on how the showerheads would perform if mounted on each end? For those who have read this far, I greatly appreciate it!

CamG-So glad you're getting close. It's so exciting!! I grew up in a split level house with the laundry in the finished basement just off the family room. Yes, it was a pain to run the clothes up the stairs, however, it made it easy to keep an eye on kids while doing laundry. However, having the laundry room upstairs eliminates all that running up & down. Plus having the laundry up means you won't have to walk through your laundry room every time you enter the house from the garage entry. It really comes down to what you're willing to trade off. Have you thought about putting a stacked W/D unit in the mud room (maybe concealed by a door) and then having the full-on laundry room upstairs? That may be another option to consider. Regardless of which level you decide to put the laundry room on, I would post your plans on the laundry and/or kitchen forums to get input on how to make that space the most efficient. For instance, in the plan in the link for the upstairs laundry, you really don't have alot of counter space for folding or anywhere for hampers. What you have is really just a room that has a sink in it and a washer/dryer. The space could be made more efficient by eliminating the little counter just as you come in the door, sliding the W/D down into that space so they're against the wall, spin the sink around the corner to sit next to the W/D. Now you have ~4'6" of space on the window wall for a folding counter and hampers underneath. If you did hampers similar to what I have, you have enough room for 3 hamper units with 2 hamper in each unit. Each hamper holds 1 full load of laundry. We use ours to presort the clothes as the dirties are brought into the laundry by each family member, which saves me some time as well. We only have 2 kids and between them & DH they generate a TON of laundry. You will really appreciate having the folding space and hamper sorting space to help keep the room organized and provide a spot for sorting & storage of dirties and eliminate the need to move clean unfolded laundry from the laundry room to another area of the house where there is more space for folded clothes to be stacked. I like the comment about a better house, not bigger. We downsized last year and, although it's half the size of our previous home, I truly believe it lives bigger. We did end up buying property and building, and we drew up our own plan, taking it to an architect to tweak a little. (DH had designed our previous home, including all the construction blueprints; but this time he just wanted to get the layout done and then let the architect take over.) I think the reason it lives so well is the fact that we sat down together and discussed our daily activities and what we wanted in each room to make it work for us. We also considered the flow through the house and how it fit OUR preferences. This is our fourth house (3rd build), and I'm happy to say it's the best fit we've ever had---which is a good thing, since this is the house we will be retiring in and plan to age in place here. I don't have the breadth of experience to say whether developer or design/build your own will be more cost effective for you. I can say we definitely came out ahead with building our own (utilizing an architect and general contractor). Our builder was an acquaintance of ours who came highly recommended by friends for whom he had built a home about 5 years earlier. He stayed on schedule and finished right on time and within our budget. Of course, we stayed on top of the budget throughout the process and decided where we wanted to spend more money and where we could save money. We sourced a lot of items on our own, which also saved. We also found property in our desired area that had just been put on the market, which proved to be ideal for us and much better than any of the areas being developed in our area. It's very hard to find property in our desired area that wasn't already snatched up by a developer. If you're trying to stick to a budget, you do need to be able to discipline yourself not to splurge on everything when you're building---and, if there is something you want to upgrade, then you need to figure out how you're going to pay for it now (not over the next 10-15-20-or-30 years), such as by cutting back on something else. And, of course, allow a contingency for the unexpected. We did this by estimating line-item costs higher than we expected, thus building in a cushion . Of course, we were highly motivated because we wanted to own the house outright, with no mortgage, at the end of the build. Most of this would apply to a developer's house, as well. If you choose one before it's finished, then you could end up with the option of choosing some very expensive upgrades that could quickly put the house over budget. Hope you have success in your search for a new home. This site has some wonderful, knowledgeable contributors that can help you along the way. There are also a lot of beautiful homes with features that will inspire you to create a lovely home but also tempt you to start seeing a luxury as a necessity. : )

Show the entire first floor plan or wherever this laundry is located. Add how many in the family, how often you do laundry. What appliances do you plan? Top load, front load. What's your climate?

Coat and shoe storage, cleaning supplies and vacuums/brooms/mops, butlers pantry, craft room/gift wrapping station, throw money at it building in custom cabinets for anything that might need an out of the way home, make it the organizational-cleaning command center of the home.

I had a large laundry room in my last house. Size ? I loved it. It had 2 washers, 1 dryer, stationary tub, chest of drawers, shelves for separating clothes. Small table and a large table for crafts and the ironing board.

The question is, What do you need? Would you use an exercise room? Would a home office be useful? Would you craft more if you had a dedicated spot? Do you need plain old storage?

Start with a good assessment of your own needs.

Hello everyone, thank you all for answers. I am new here and was not sure how this works. Here are my answers:
- this is a new build
- 4 in the family
- we do laundry almost every day
- the dimensions of the room: 4m2 x 5m2
- the room is in first floor, left is a kid’s room, right is master bedroom with wardrobe
- nobody in the family is a crafter, artist etc. we are all very much into sports
- we have one storage downstairs, but will also use this space for cleaning supplies, mops, vacuum etc (but not for example luggage, christmas decoration..because we have enough space in other room for this)

Add a closet for the vacuum, broom, cleaning supplies. Make sure you have someplace to hang things to dry. A counter for folding is useful, as is a place to store laundry baskets.

I would add a sink too. Sounds like the space will be put to good use.

That size laundry room would not be too big in my house!!! I'd love it!

How about putting closets on either side as you walk into the room. They could hold your mops, brooms, floor steamer, ironing board, cleaning supplies, etc. Or you could use one of the closets for linens.

Here are some ideas:

You definitely need a sink, cabinet space, and hanging/folding areas. I use a couple of my cabinets to store floral vases and flower arrangement supplies.

This laundry room holds a laundry basket for every member of the family.
