Why moldings don't and shouldn't match in all rooms
Comments (16)The young people I know have a very different idea about what "entertaining" is than we do. They need the space because their version (and ours, when we were young) involves a whole bunch of their friends, lots of drinks and snacks and music, and general horsing around. We are more sedate about the whole business. But I disagree that just because you do things only once a month, you shouldn't have a house that supports them. I have four people at my table as often as once a week, six once a month, and eight or ten three or four times a year. Then there's the occasional cocktail party for 20 or so, which is about all this house can handle. I want all those groups to be comfortable, and to feel that we made an effort on their behalf. I want to be able to handle them all relatively easily, which keeps it fun for me. But back to the molding - I don't think it's necessarily about showing off. It's about an old-fashioned level of formality, and a signal that life is lived a certain way in the house. And it's also a pleasure to look at. I don't think anyone should feel uncomfortable in beautiful surroundings, even if they aren't part of one's everyday life. The best advice I ever heard given to a young person about to be entertained in a place that scared her to death was this: "Don't worry about not fitting in. Just stand up straight, smile at everyone, and speak clearly, softly, and rarely."...See MoreHelp! Newly installed white cabinets don't match paint swatch.
Comments (13)Thank you everyone for all your advice and suggestions. I have read each and every one of your posts. thank you- First let me back this up by saying this: My cabinets were initially installed with a sprayed paint on them- a "Pittsburg" paint that my cabinet maker (yes he is old school!- fantastic builder and very nice to work with) had matched up to BM sImply White. Pittsburg is the paint he prefers to use over anything else b/c of it's commercial grade quality. We did not ask for a sample of how the actual color would look but we did however see what a sprayed cabinet looked like. Separately we saw what BM simply white looked like. I guess that's where the mistake was b/c even though it was color matched using a "formula" the cabinets casted a faint lime green tone. The kitchen looked like a "white kitchen" but when you held up real WHITE- you could see a huge difference. SO, without hesitation, our painter took our cabinets down and re primed and sprayed what he could and hand painted the other cabs which had the granite on it. Before he did the "2nd paint", he showed us the white we would be using and asked for approval. It looked white and much better than what was there, so we approved it for our cabinet builder to go ahead and re spray the cabs. Ok- 2nd install- cabinets go it, some look WHITE and others look really off. No consistency. NOT HAPPY!! That's when I wrote my first post on GW. SO, we had our cab guy here today and again, with a great attitude and willing to solve this "white" issue we are having, we decided to talk to the people at BM and do some more research and we are now testing BM Simply white in the ADVANCE. This came highly recommended by the BM people. Apparently the yellowing that you MIGHT see in an oil base is not for YEARS to come- and that's very slight. BUT the oil base paint is the best when it comes to preserving the cabinets from nicks and scratches and with white cabinets, you have to be very careful of that.So with all this being said, my husband and I just held up two painted SIMPLY WHITE BM boards. One on the corner upper and one next to it. BOTH the same white. The one on the curved cabinet is a different color than the one next to it- it has almost and icey bluish tint to it. NOW we think it may be the lighting. So, my husband just ran to Home Depot to get a different bulb for the ceiling light. We will try this before we have our cabinet guy take down everything and repaint!!! I just think white cabinets in our kitchen may just be very inconsistent. Go figure, we have a slew of big windows with natural light and a ton of high hats. this kitchen reno is just part of a huge reno on our house/ gutting and addition- that went smoooooth. The kitchen cabinet part is what's giving us a hard time. going on 5 months without a kitchen. UGH!...See MoreHow to keep painted cabinets from chipping?
Comments (15)The absolute best product for keeping your painted cabinets pristine?? Birth Control! :-) But seriously, come join us on the paint forum and do some searches. The consensus there is that the new 100% acrylic waterborne paints (different from just "latex") are superior in performance to oil, especially because oil is actually more susceptible to chipping/cracking over time, as it dries hard and brittle. 100% acrylic, on the other hand, stays somewhat flexible over time, and is thus less likely to crack and chip. It also won't yellow. I've also read (on the paint forum) that mildew and bacteria grow better in an oil paint environment, but I haven't found any sources to explain that claim to me. But birth control is still the BEST product for keeping your entire kitchen (heck--your entire home!) looking it's newly remodeled best. I wonder why more KD's don't offer it at the initial consultation. Course, if you already HAVE children (as I do), then the next best option would be a certain well known proposal. A Modest Proposal, if you will.... No help in Paint Forum
Comments (9)Thanks for the input everyone! We would be doing a similar shade in cabinet paint to the trim paint--both would be shade of white. The trim will be a SW Linen White to match the interior windows--this is not a standard color they carry, it is apparently a special formula they make for Pella (the interior of the windows were pre-painted at the Pella factory). There will be at least 2 places in the kitchen/breakfast/great room area where trim and cabinet would be right against each other, and probably a similar amount of spots in each bathroom. So, I'm thinking from your responses and, given my answers to your questions, I probably should try to match the trim and cabinets--if we do an off-white shade on the cabinet. ontariomom, it's interesting that you feel glaze is not as timeless--I've thought the same thing about the gray, beige, green, etc. painted cabinets that seem so popular right now. My husband and I both really love the weathered or aged look that glaze provides. We did it in our last remodel and were very happy. However, I've heard others in addition to you mention that they feel glaze is not classic or is "out." So, I'm going back and forth on doing what we love (glaze) with chance it may look dated relatively soon, trying a painted "color" cabinet such as light gray or beige, or doing a painted off-white cabinet with no glaze. tcufrog, I'm trying to work with the cabinetmaker to get sample boards, so hopefully that will help the decision!...See More- last year
