Back deck privacy fence ideas

I have a 30 deck in the yard that is attached to my pool. I stripped four coats of solid stain off down to the bare wood and the rails as well and stained with a transparent cedar tone. I live in the city and built some privacy fencing as you see. It's stained as the same color of my backyard inside fence you may be able to see beyond the pool and the right side of yard. Now that I have it down to the cedar I'm wondering if I should go back to the dark gray on top as well or leave it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I am not sure what youa re asking . Where I live you have to have a lockable fence around the pool and why do you have the gray and the black on the fence you show?

You have a lot of different fencing and wood textures going on. It’s visually a lot. What looks most out of place now is the taller white fence. It’s an odd style and it’s fighting with the lattice on the pool fence. I’d replace the white fence with simple natural cedar, laid horizontally.

The Camillia I bought last fall is still hanging in there, but hasn't done well for me so far. I covered it over with a milk crate and leaves last winter, worried that it wouldn't tolerate the cold it's first season, after I planted it in the fall and not the spring. I don't think it appreciated having that milk crate of leaves sitting on it all winter, because it dropped all it's buds before they opened, then lost leaves over the summer. But it has been in the ground for a year and it still has some healthy leaves and I think I see a couple of flower buds starting to develop. This year, it's on it's own over the winter. I am still interested enough in growing them, to give it a different location if it is still struggling next spring. And I may order a different variety of Camillia and plant it in another location and try it again. I hope it makes it through the winter and starts putting on some growth next year. I think the biggest challenge in my garden is dryness and not the winter cold.

Can't really speak to the product you envision. if it were me, I would try to find some vegetation in the vine form that would propagate and be hardy. I believe ambiance truly suffers when a "structure" is installed. imo

Vaporvac, I'm an oldie but have difficulty growing roses here. Your experiences will be of great value. I almost said that my contribution will be the roses that don't grow but then I remembered Etoile de Hollande. I planted it a few years ago and it promptly died. OK, I thought, it doesn't like it here. Then Melissa highly recommended it as a good rose that was also tough. Having faith in Melissa's opinion, I tried it this year and it has grown very well in a tough spot. I am delighted! But left wondering how many times we should replant a rose in order to know it will not grow for us. I usually max out at three if it is one I have fallen in love with. Am I being stingy? Cath

Cherry Laurels love shade and grow fast once established (evergreen shrubs to small trees) but are poisonous to dogs. I planted a row of them on my north side to block out a purple house on the hill, and will just take my chances that I don't get a stupid dog when I get another dog :) Camellias also love shade and they flower in the fall and winter. They are shrubs but really they are small trees, they do grow slow however. Tulip poplar would grow very quickly to reach for the light, and the leaves would get rather large in the shade. That tree gets big though! Also, a thought: drive around and look for houses in similar conditions... What is growing in those situations?! I “cheat" all the time this way with landscaping. Also, maybe you could befriend the new owner and convince them to grow cross vine or Virginia creeper on the side of their house? Think understory trees too, several people have mentioned some great ones (especially hornbeam/ironwood/musclewood, dogwood, and redbud). I would add serviceberry and beech to that list (although beech eventually gets large. It keeps its leaves in the winter).

the gray doesn't work. I'd paint it the same color as the color below it, or the house siding. that would look much better w/the cedar. is it navy or black? I actually like black w/the cedar, but it looks blue in the other shot

BTW, any other type of privacy fencing you could do for a more cohesive look?

what about the lattice? I like that

My yard is fenced in. I made all the lattice and privacy myself, not purchased. I was basically asking what color to do the white part. The neighbor's window is right off the deck and needed privacy

Patricia, that was a previous color. Like I said I had sanded the deck and rails and looking to see if I should paint the top the same color as the bottom...in the dark grey black

I could also sand the 4x4 posts to the top in each section then stain the posts and do the privacy in same as the lattice I made

try painting the tops soot. lets see what it looks like. I think it would look better than the gray (or white)

I agree with Beth about the color for the top part...if you also sanded the posts to the cedar it'll pull it together nicely.

I like your fence work, especially the woven privacy fence.

Shirlpp, had to cut 4x4s down to 1.5 inches. Very tedious. I hate the store stuff

You don't want to hear this but I would paint the entire fence structure- lattice, framing etc, the soot color. It is distracting now, you want the fence to recede
