Banks weak but Credit Unions Strong?
Comments (12)Yes, credit unions can fail. Any depository institution can fail. I think it's safe to say, though, that credit unions fail at a rate far lower than banks. If you are worried about your credit union's health, you can contact the NCUA. "But, it stands to reason that credit unions may be following banks and mortgage companies because credit unions are allowed to finance mortgages." Actually, no not really. Yes, credit unions can finance mortgages and other kinds of loans (but they don't necessarily have to). But credit unions are generally exempt from the strictures of the Community Reinvestment Act because they loan only to members. Credit unions were not required to increase their lending portfolios to marginal borrowers as banks were under the 1998 (?) revisions to the CRA. As such, the number of at risk loans in a credit union's portfolio is very like a lot smaller. Ah, the link below explains why credit unions are not bound by the Community Reinvestment Act. Here is a link that might be useful: Credit Unions and the CRA...See Morea warning about using credit union-issued credit cards
Comments (5)I am a merchant who accepts credit cards. On this end it's pretty cut and dry. I get a notice of a chargeback and I must produce my copy of the credit card receipt with their signature on it. It must be either imprinted or through a terminal. With online sales I must produce the hard copy of the order. I have 5 business days to either send or fax my copy proving the charge, or the money is automatically deducted from my bank. Plus a $25 fee. I get chargebacks because I'm an artist who does art and craft fairs throughout the northeast and there are times people in say, New Jersey see a charge from a company they never heard of in Vermont. "I've never been to Vermont!" So they challenge. I produce the receipt and a note they made a purchase at such and such craft fair, and it's done. Go to your credit Union in person and talk to someone who can actually help you. Have someone with some authority help you. You're finding out phone tag doesn't work. Go up the chain of command at the CU to get things done. You have 24 months from the date of the alleged charge to challenge it. The merchant has 5 business days to answer....See MoreBanking
Comments (32)I too love our little credit union. Like Fran, it's fee free, we never pay a cent for anything and only a 5.00 share account balance is required. They have friendly service, a great website experience, an easy banking app and we can get money for free from any Credit Union ATM anywhere in the US. Most importantly, when our account was wiped out by a thief who stole my atm number, they were very kind to us and had the funds returned immediately without any additional stress. We've been with them for 10 years now and have no intent on ever leaving. I agree too that anyone not satisfied with the service they get should shop around for something new. There are so many options....See MoreAdvice on getting best mortgage?
Comments (9)Maybe different states are different. I'm a member of USAA, and a local credit union, but they couldn't touch the rates I was offered by a mortgage broker. We've done 4 refis in 15 years, and each time, the mortgage broker had the best (with lowest/no fees). Additionally, I have never wasted my time meeting with one in person. It's a phone call. In fact, except for a mobile notary, it's all done digitally and over the phone. But this past month, in the midst of the most recent refi, our current lender offered unilaterally to lower our mortgage rate below what the broker was offering us. No refi, just a rate readjustment. We had to go with that. I hope this helps....See More
