The article is missing one large method of payment. Insurance payouts. I've read countless articles right here on Houzz that mention a busted pipe lead to a new kitchen, bathroom, etc, after the home insurance paid up for damages. If you're a good DIY type, that kind of payout can go a LONG way in your house.

I waited patiently 4 years in the new home for the cash to come in (pay out of a life insurance) and will pay for my kitchen reno in fall with credit cards and pay them off every month. That way I get my points on my card as well. I sometimes use promotional cards from a store if there are added financial advantages on them, pay them off and just don’t use them afterwards again... :) In those 4 years I planned my kitchen meticulously with the help of Houzz - wich just added to the fun! I will document the reno well, you may be able to read about it!

You can also borrow against savings. It ties up your savings but the rate is very low and you don't have to have an appraisal or pay up front costs for the loan, plus you still have your savings once you pay it off. I like the in-store cards that offer 18 or 12 months same as cash.
