"Cool" look - in person, are the chairs a blend with floor stain?

Do the shutters crowd the tall unit ? ... do the shutters cover up the typical stored items or cooking mess?

What color are kitchen cabinets? is it same color as trim by the shutters?

The shutters are not working in that spot…what is their purpose?…

Also the trim around the opening is too big ….in proportion to the room…but the major question is what style are you going for… in this room?

How do you use that bar? Can we see it from the other side as well? Could you live without it?

The black cabinet is not a good fit …style wise… in this room…

We use it daily as an espresso bar. It’s kind of nice to have it open when we have a party to serve drinks from.

I’m not sure why the trim is so wide.

The dining room chairs are just what I have. Would like something more contemporary.

Remove the shutter and suspend a bamboo shade from the center top of the opening. I think Lowe's may custom cut them for you. EDITED to add cordless versions will be optimal and can be found online too.

Am sensing that the trim is making the opening much more conspicuous than you would like it to be.  The reappearing question is what style you would like the room to have,? The distressed shutters don't seem to fit with your other items which are much more finished.

Nothing is working. Too many disparate furnishings, the bird cage needs a different home.

Move the cabinet with dishes to where you have console and lamp.

Get a long console and art above for that shutter wall space. Long enough to serve..have two lamps

Close up the the pass through dry bar, and drywall after you remove trim. It's a short walk to the kitchen.

Get a rug under the table.......probably nine by 12. Choose chairs with more upholstery to play off the great deal of wood in the area.

The light fixture is wrong......and the ice cold led bulbs make the floor look orange, the table look orange and the walls look sallow.

Post a few images of dining areas you love.

Just an idea to toss in here: Remove the shutter, as it sounds like you really use that opening a lot! Find or have made a mirror to hang where you have the smaller framed picture. It would give the illusion of symmetry which might be nice on that wall. I assume your new console will replace the tall black hutch?

It looks like your house was built with a sort of rustic modern ranch theme? Whatever style you choose, make it compatible with the house itself rather than fighting it. Even if you think yourself modern styles like organic/natural glam are a possibility.

I'm sorry... I think I am reading now you will keep the hutch / cabinet? Which is fine. But where are you thinking of putting the console?

Jan Moyer is spot on, but it’s time to replace the black cabinet. If you decide you don’t want to close up the dry bar window, then open it up to make it fully functional as a coffee and dry bar area to access from dining area. Also lose the wide trim and finish off with drywall.

I know nothing is working LOL. The birdcage, table with the lamp on the wood wall, and the bookcase, chair and little table, are all to be removed. I was hoping to keep the black cabinet because it really does look great it real life.

Honestly? Not loving the gray and dry rustic barn wood walls with the flooring, at all. Maybe it's time for some paint : ) Posts and beams? Okay.......not the walls so much.

If you want to be able to close off the area and not have the bar open, the most unobtrusive way would be to replace the shutters with plan slab doors and paint them the same color as the wall.

I have done this over the years for myself and other people. I have replaced a couple closet doors with completely flush doors and minimal hardware and painted them out the wall color. I have a flush, built in medicine cabinet that utilizes space but was visually in a weird spot and it's covered with the bathroom wallpaper.

I would wall off that opening. The coffee bar is only a few steps away around the corner.

I hear that the dry bar does have it's uses, so i would hesitate to close it completely, but @palimpsest suggestion of hiding it in plain sight by simply creating flush set of doors and removing the elements (trim and shutters) which draw attention is worth considering. Even if you don't want to use it, you could place a furniture piece over it.

There's an empty book shelf in one corner--maybe the rounded cabinet could go there? Really there's plenty of room just to move it away from the shutters. Since floor is the least likely element to go--I would edit anything that does not work with it and build it back, or paint it before letting it stay. I am not seeing a point of the shutters ever. That pass through can sit open when you are not entertaining.

I see no point to the opening. Close it off. The wall is the most prominent in the room, and right now? Not GOOD. Sorry. Kiss it goodbye.

I agree with other posters - there's a bit too much going on in your dining room. So, would suggest you simplify furnishing and pare them down. Also, the different woods are not working well together - floor, timber columns and rough saw interior siding. Your floors look great but would suggest removing the interior siding at the stair and replace with gypsum board. As much as I love wood columns in your case I might suggest furring around them with gypsum board and painting to match your walls. Your tabletop seems too busy. Would suggest a table that is much more subdued with chairs that are more modern in style. Good luck!
