Window Boxes On a Slanted Roof
I would love to add window boxed to the top two windows of our house. The windows are level with the slanted roof. Is this possible and if so what would the best way to attach them?

last yearI love the look of window boxes, but even if you custom built boxes to adapt the the roof slope, it doesn’t seem like a good idea to have them sitting on the roof due to the possibility of water issues. It occured to me that you could get a similar look by building a box or pergola over your garage, but I’m concerned about blocking your rain gutter. Perhaps someone on this forum has figured out how to solve that problem and can offer advice.

Replacement bay-box window

What material do you use on top of window on outside of house- metal sheeting, roof tiles. We think that the roof tiles might be too heavy. Comments (2)James, you are right; this is a highly unusual window install in a mansard, what I call a "reverse dormer". I'd seriously consider building a proper dormer that juts out, even if you leave the window where it is, but you could also move the window out, and create a deep sill inside. Comments (15)I suppose I could have been a bit more explicit on that front @dennisgli. The bottom of the window is "sealed" with a lot of silicone and covered with a piece of cedar. Then a bead of silicone was laid down between the window and the cedar. The windows face almost due west and take quite a beating from the sun. So the silicone has failed and now water and debris is collecting between the window and the cedar. Sure, I could remove the cedar, clean the silicone and use the same recipe to re seal it but, in my opinion it is janky at best. Im perfectly okay spending some money for a professional result that is more hands off down the road. Comments (9)When we first moved in, we tried th sofa where the chairs are and didn’t like it, it made the space feel tight and closed in. There are too many wires and TV accessories for putting it over the fireplace. Putting a cabinet along that wall for the TV would make the room feel even more narrow. We don’t use the fireplace and want to remove it; despite our best efforts, it is cold and drafty when it’s not on. We do not live in an area with natural gas, and since our primary heating fuel is oil we pay an exhorbanent rate for propane. I realize a window seat won’t be used often, but I was hoping it would make the room feel more,spacious. Another reason I wanted to do a bump out was to add insulation to the foundation exterior. When this addition was put on, they only did a crawl space with less than 18” of clearance. And there is no insulation around the foundation or under the floor. our Only option is to insulate the exterior. We will eventually install a large patio outside. Im not a fan of decks; we had a huge one growing up and every other year we’d have to,clean it and reseal it. We want to install windows along that wall with the fireplace as we have a great backyard. The living room is 11.5’ by 23’. how are you going to attach the boxes? the window sits very low w/no room for the box
this is a split level w/room below the windows
what do you plan on planting?what direction do they face?
are you willing to water daily?
annuals will need to be removed and replaced yearly
the flowers will need tending to or it will look raggedy
if you just want to do something like those petunias, great! But don't expect more than a few months of them looking like that.
Maybe you could plant some pothos ivy or something similar that doesn't require a lot of care?
Coleus will have color, but don't like full sun. they need pruning.
I like the trellis/arbor over the garage idea better. let me show you
(you can image search "pergolas over garage doors" or something like that
you could do something simple like this and hang petunia baskets,,
or, purne out those hedges on the left side, install the trellis, and plant something that grows tall and trails
clearing out that hedge on the left side will give you more room for a larger pot to hold some type of climbing vine/rose. put one on the opposite too and let them grow to the middle
these vines are in two smaller pots that don't take up a lot of room.
during the summer, morning glories would be perfect here! and they grow super fast.

last yearlast modified: last yearYour house would look more attractive with the focus on the doorway and window, and with less emphasis on the garage side of the house. Right now the white garage doors pop out, and the shutters are also emphasizing the left side.
I would not put pergolas or anything on the garage side. The right side of your house is the pretty side. Don't emphasize the less attractive part.
Painting the garage doors a darker colour to blend in with the brick will help a lot. Paint the downspout to the right of the doorway the same colour as the brick. I'd remove the shutters.
Draw the eye to the right side with some blooms or shrubs with colourful foliage. Plant a row of something white or bright along the shrubs you have to draw the eye across the house. Trim down the shrubs that hide the window, if you can.
I'd paint the front door a real colour, or white, to draw the eye.
