SS Appliances - When Did They Debut and Then Become the Standard?
Comments (19)this totally into SS must have come about around about 2000? I do think the emergence of so many of the home remodel, redecorating shows has pushed it way out there. they are more expensive and those shows surely get those appliances free - as promotion. Maybe SS was too expensive prior to that for the normal to well to do people to use. Now people go into debt to get them. It's a status symbol thing to me. up until about then I'd never seen one outside of a restaurant. not in the homes of my wealthy relatives, at any appliance store/showroom when I was redoing kitchens in about '70 and '82 nor had my sister and she seemed to redo a kitchen about every 10 yrs from about '68 thru 2007. and yes, she now put in SS with this last (and probably final) build. But that was what her dh wanted and he is the chief cook now (she retired from the kitchen except for clean up) - she wouldn't have chosen SS. I don't remember seeing SS when I shopped for my last fridge in 1998. I bought almond. I've read about some appliances in tritanium? something like that - have no idea what that looks like tho. for now the shows are pushing granite or quartz and SS and that's what everyone thinks they need to have to be current / in style. whether they like it or not... It's great for the remodeling people/stores because people everywhere are changing out their kitchens to put those things in....See MoreSo when did hand me downs become out of favor
Comments (29)We do reuse and recycle many household items here too. My kids are all built differently so we don't hand down many clothes. I donate clothes in decent condition to the school or the thrift stores. People are funny about used things. It can be quite entertaining at times. I've run into people who wouldn't be caught dead shopping at a garage sale or thrift store. Those same people do shop antique stores and estate sales which are glorified garage sales at higher prices. Then there are those people who don't shop thrift stores because that is for poor people. That's laughable. Truly poor people probably couldn't afford the prices at some of the thrift stores. I shop there because I the thrill of the hunt and it is possible to find a bargain on some things, but usually not clothes. I live in one of those areas where people often overprice their garage sale clothes. I can buy new for less. Overall, my best clothes bargains usually come from the mall during the 75-90% off sales. I wouldn't be too offended because someone doesn't want your hand me downs. I've gotten offers before. Honestly, I just didn't want to deal with the extra work. Sometimes when you get clothes ahead, you're storing it for a while even possibly a couple of years. Sometimes less is more when you're trying to organize and manage a household....See MoreWhen did I become so indecisive?
Comments (13)Thank you to all for you replies! Definitely some great suggestions. It is also comforting to know that I am not the only one who has this problem! mercymygft - I think you are right, being TKO has done this to me! I know that I shouldn't rush this decision because it's a big deal, but at the same time I would like to have everything all done by Christmas since we host the holiday and my 1st child's birthday is the day after so we have a lot of entertaining to do coming up. And the fact that I've lived in a makeshift kitchen for 4 years is making me anxious. At least I've been able to use by Bluestar during this time! (the only thing staying in the "new" kitchen) Francoise - I do *Love* Jillandmatt's kitchen, and also Nini's recently redone kitchen with the light perimeter and walnut island. That is what is making it so hard! I think both styles would look nice in my house - Four square colonial built in 1920, but perhaps as Breezy points out, the soapstone would fit the era of the house a little better. And yes, I think I would be bummed if Soapstone wasn't even an option so perhaps that is my answer. My husband thinks I am over thinking it -which I probably am :)- and he thinks we should stick to our original design, which we might. Maybe going out to the stone yard in a few weeks will help make the decision! Until then....I hope I don't drive myself crazy!...See MoreBagged Lettuce in Restaurants
Comments (12)Bagged lettuce started as a high end restaurant product, beginning, I believe, with baby lettuces. The "bags" are really more like small bales. High end grocery stores started offering the same product in bulk bins, fill your own bag, but the delicate leaves only lasted a day or two. They bags filled with ... nitrogen? I think? ... came after that and were so successful that they generalized it to other kinds of lettuce. We usually get boxes, but I live close to where the greens are grown, so I'm more likely to get it fresh, and I always inspect the to see if they've been out too long and damp inside or starting to go. I love baby lettuces and boxes and bags are the only way to get them easily. I also love the wild arugula, baby spinach, "Power to the Greens" from Trader Joe's which has kale, spinach and chard. None of these are "dried up" or "pale". Generally, a bag will prevent lettuce from drying out, but being in the open in a bin in a cooler with an evaporator will dry it. Are you talking about iceberg? If so, I totally agree that it should be washed, torn and served immediately to retain its crunch--and the soft, outer leaves should be removed. OTOH, I love Mesclun, whether it's at home, or in a restaurant, and don't mind the bag at all....See Morechloebud
