Paint The Old House Exterior

Edwardian exterior paint colours

Looking for some help with exterior paint colours for our 1912 Edwardian in Toronto. Windows (new) are black. Roof (done by prior owners and not being replaced right now) is black and very heavy. Door will be new and Farrow and Ball Hague Blue. Trying to decide between going dark (Farrow Railings for example) on all wood trim and then using a grey/blue for the currently red’ish cladding and the inset areas under the gable and in the portico (as well as the porch floor and treads). Alternatively, total opposite - creamy off white on all wood trim. Intend to paint out the terrible flashing from the roof that is wrapped around the wood trim along the roof line. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated!

Maybe because the picture is in shade, but I think the house doesn't need more dark. I'd go with creamy white.

I'm not unbiased -- I like color -- but I think the expanding pallette available in even run-of-the-mill vinyl siding suggests strong colors are comong in, not going out. If you're perhaps changing the roof color, you really are free to pick whatever you like. What colors appeal to you? Do you like the house green (just not faded), or are you a blue person, or do strong reds appeal to you...?

There are too many colors on there, and you have gray stone, and gray roof. I would look for a nice lighter shade of gray. Pick a gray from your stone. It isnt cohesive right now, with different color browns and tans. Without being able to see the exact stone, it is hard to pick a color of gray on a computer monitor, since all monitors are a bit different. I would not paint the door, nor pick a color for the door, until the house is repainted. A brighter color on the door, would show off your entry area, much better, than what you have.

Look at SW Urbane Bronze for the front door. It's an interesting brown/gray color that is very popular on exteriors. It's a shame they didn't frame the front door to have sidelights. It's very minimal the way it is. When you look for a new garage door, see what their stock colors are. Factory finishes are the best. You want something that blends with the brick. Garage doors aren't a feature to emphasize on a house. What you have doesn't look quite right because it's close to the color of the stucco on the front, but not the same. It's better to have something completely different than to have something close but not quite. It's possible to paint stucco. If you haven't done it yet as part of your gradual update you might be best to match the stucco color with the garage door. While it is winter when no one's landscaping is at its best, it does look like you could use more landscaping.

Looks like you've posted another discussion on the same house, here's what I just posted on your other post: With the colour of your siding, I suggest black trim. Also suggest that you cover the painted columns with wood and stain the same colour stain as elsewhere on the house, with the exception of the 2 areas where you have handrails & columns which I show in black. Improving the landscaping with something that works in your area would also be a plus...

Have you taken a look at what colors and color placement this type of house would have had? Not to do an exact reproduction necessarily, but just to inform you what the design intention was, and following that will get you better results rather than just randomly applying different colors in different places. This is a great site which illustrates what I mean - note there are 34 pgs of the befores/afters (links on bottom of page). Oddly by switching to a more historically accurate pallette, the house often looks so much fresher than had they stuck wtih boring greige or whatever the current fad du jour is. As the saying goes - what's old is new again! ETA - take a look at the 1916 brick at the very bottom of pg 1 - is this kinda what you are after? Red brick with what looks like hague blue + a cream -beautiful!!!
