What type of wood filler should I use?

Woodpecker attacked our house and damaged several exterior windowsills.

Some are worse than the photo, others not as bad, but a couple of them are really messed up (an inch or more of depth). Essentially ripped off the corners.

I want to fill in the damaged area and repair the damaged corners with a hard corner so that it looks like it did before it was damaged and then will re-paint.

There are a lot of products on the market, and I don't know which to use. I'm afraid that if I try to use wood filler so that I can sand it into the shape of the corner it won't adhere well enough and the corner will just fall off later. I haven't worked with Putty or Epoxy, but Don't know that I could get a good edge without sanding and I've read some of them can't be sanded.

You might be able to use automotive bondo, for repairing cars. It is used for many things, besides autos. Its certainly worth a try on one window though. I donth think any other type filler is going to work for you.

I always putty in between coats of poly and before sanding. That way you can sand off any of the gooey residue that putty leaves behind and your putty gets a coat of finish over it. You can also mix 2 or 3 colors together to custom match the putty to your stain color.

It depends on what you want. Solid color will cover up the wood like a paint does. Semi transparent will let the texture of the wood show through.

Slightly rustic seems to call for hardwoods to me unless it's in the Southwest. I know some worry about hardwood in kitchens. It's never been a problem in the 25 plus years I've lived in a house with hardwood in the kitchen and it's "softer" on one's feet and legs as one ages.

For a diy, there are a large variety of trim pieces available at the hardware/home improvement center. Color matching might be an issue. Based on the photos, pvc.

Abatron is the product you want. It works well and has all the properties you need. Here is a useful video that will show how it is used to repair wood that is damaged much worse than yours: Abatron

Sorry but NEVER BONDO. It expands at a different rate than wood and causes the wood behind it to rot. Abatron wood epoxy is expensive but the only product worth using in this situation. It is far cheaper than new wood…

JBWeld also makes a wood epoxy which is the product I am currently using. One tip I found useful is applying the epoxy a bit too full and then waiting until it is starting to harden to get a good surface finish. Don't wait until it is rock hard to clean up the appearance. It will take some practice but it is not a super difficult product to apply.
