New Range needed_Am I crazy to stick with Electric Coils?
Comments (50)>>>"Way better than a propane countertop option."<<< Well, if you have generator the next time Texas gets cold. . . :>) Good countertop induction cookers (a/k/a Portable Induction Cooktops or PICs) can be "way better" as long as you have power, but many of the inexpensive models are seriously deficient when it comes to a "design for those who want more stove top temperature control" as Jan DeKenis sought. If considering buying a PIC to check out induction, you might want to have a look at recent articles at Cooks Illustrated, CenturyLife, and Wirecutter to get some recommendations on choosing one of the better PIC models. When it comes to full scale electric cooking appliances, though, Pittsburrito is correct that induction stoves and cooktops are very much the electric option with as much (sometimes more) "stovetop temperature control" than gas appliances....See MoreAm I Crazy?!? Comments (18)Ktlri, Thanks for the follow-up as although the build is done, I haven't fully furnished the residence yet and had my professional shots done for our records and the community here. I'll admit - I had to go back over the thread and re-read to give the proper feedback but for the main range I ended up with a Zephyr 48" Monsoon II and a curvaball that I didn't even find out about until after this thread had already run it's course...I went with the Capital Connoisseurian 48" Dual-Fuel w/ 8 (Open) Burner configuration and I must say I absolutely LOVE IT. The fit and finish is as good as if not better than all of the BlueStars I saw in person (I visited about 6 different ones in 3 different stores during the process) and I've been estatic about the oven capacity and having an electric oven instead of gas for our baking purposes, etc. The electric rotisserie, electronic food probe and the kicker was the Wok insert (all of which I've used and very happy with the performance). It does take a while to get used to having this many powerful burners (all 25K minus the simmer burner) but it is a huge time saver for me as my wife and I both "prep" our food for the week on Sunday nights and with 2 cooks in the kitchen we can do multiple large quantities of food at once. Here's a couple cell phone pics and thanks for asking. One of these days once we finish with the interior designers and the furniture finally arrives (We're talking 12-16 week delivery times for most pieces - what the heck?!?) we'll get some legit shots done for everyone. Thanks! PS - Sorry for the dim light on the 2nd pic as the Monsoon II isn't installed/turned on - we're still waiting to pass the final building permit tomorrow before installing the Zephyr as we already have 2 makeup airs installed to run the furnaces and the code was going to require an addition 2 (4 total) so we are working our way around that idiotic code....See MoreInstall questions from freestanding range to 30" cooktop/wall oven
Comments (14)Your main issue with putting a cooktop over a wall oven will be clearances. Most wall ovens (if not all) are built with the assumption that nothing is on top of them. Hence the control panel intrudes several inches into the cabinet. I remember someone having this issue in that the cooktop could not be dropped in without banging into the oven cover that intruded about an inch into the space required for the cooktop. you will have to look at the 'naked' oven and see how far the panel intrudes into the cooktop space, as well as how far the cooktop goes into the cabinet (depth minus counter top thickness and cabinet top, if any). Excess heat might require that you ventilate the cabinet. Many of the European induction tops talk about this since they contain fans. European cabinets typically stand off the floor on legs and sit away from the wall thus allowing air to flow behind them if you knotch the cabinet below the counter top. For us with toe kicks, one needs to either drill holes or cut them out a bit and put a dark screen in place. Some cabinets sit flat against the wall, some don't (the sidewalls protrude a bit beyond the back board). If you're getting custom cabinets, have the cabinet maker make something for you. Otherwise you can, depending on your cabinet maker, find a base unit that will work or that could be modified. There are ones (or used to be) for drop-in ranges....See Morepony wall or no? freestanding or alcove? slightly crazy...help,please.
Comments (16)Just go for where everyone is headed, and purchase a "walk in tub". You will like that alot more in 10 years, than you will ever THINK about using the 'washtub' tub, you are looking at now. And than you won't have to update that bathroom again ? Also, try to create a shower that you can roll into. Seriously. It takes some engineering but you want the opening into the shower as large as possible, for one thing. ...Than, look into using faux marble for your shower sides, do not use fiberglass or tile. DO use the great mold free backboard all over you bathroom before adding the tile wall treatments or faux marble. Use faux marble on ALL the windowsills too. You will not be sorry. It is the best economical choice and it lasts FOREVER...unlike tile and grout.....Just somethings I wish someone had told me way back when... I just saw this idea for the first time. Certainly takes the EXPENSIVE glass or tile enclosure, and the cleaning of that, out of the shower along the wall.
