How do I get rid of this plague of compost flies?
Comments (43)Just a quick update... First off, thanks again to everyone who posted here, your advice was very welcome. I had surprising difficulty finding some proper soil/compost/stuff/whatever for the house plants. All the local garden centres had sold out, and I still haven't got any. However, I cut back on the watering quite drastically, and now only water when the plants look like they need it. The plants look as fine as they ever did, my chilli plants are all flowering, and the flies have basically gone. We still get the odd one or two, but nothing that would make me think twice. We don't see them around the plants any more, which makes me think that the few we see are either tough ones that haven't had the decency to die since we dried out there homes, or ones that have come from elsewhere. I still intend to repot as and when I can get some soil, but it's a lot less urgent now. Thanks again....See MoreHow can I get rid of 100's of rose suckers?
Comments (17)My guess is that it's a gallica, and the person who was/is doing this has absolutely no idea what she is up against. It doesn't look like rootstock. To return to pre-landscaper days, do nothing. It may not bloom this year because of the possible Round Up damage from last year, but should bloom next year. However, because of the disturbance, it will probably end up as a considerably larger shrub than it had been. Whatever it is, it probably blooms on old wood, so any serious attempts to get rid of it will lead to a lot fewer flowers. If you want to get rid of it, I'd recommend a combination of digging and Round Up, and expect it to take several years. There are roots that will grow beneath the surface and not be visible for a while. If one of those comes up in the middle of the grass, you have a problem. Getting the genie back in the bottle isn't going to be easy on this one. Probably the easiest way to deal with this, is to take out the perennials, grass it over, and mow it for a couple of years. That will get rid of it. Anything else, you are going to miss pieces of it, and any one of those pieces may be able to become a substantial bush before you catch it. This is particularly true in a heavily planted mixed border where there are lots of hiding places....See MoreYikes! Now, it's time to update! Help Me, Please GET RID OF THE GOLD!
Comments (1065)I hear ya D2G, we all have plenty of those missed opportunities in our homes. I know I have tons! It certainly doesn't make your home any less beautiful! However, I would not draw attention to it with a FP screen, except maybe one of those fold over types Flo mentioned-they tend to stand higher. I also wouldn't buy anything else for the mantle. You don't need to match the art, and you have so many lovely things. I would sooner see your beautiful clock and candelabras, though not "perfect," because they are a piece of your story....See MoreShould I try to update floor to ceiling 70’s flagstone fireplace?
Comments (12)I think the fireplace is very well done. The main problem is the incremental addition of all the clutter that has occurred. If that were my home, I'd remove every single thing on the hearth, the two lamps, and -- though you probably don't want to hear it -- that television. The tv is a distracting focal point and it's very high placement is terrible from an ergonomic standpoint. Yes, people put tv sets above the mantel all the time, but that doesn't make it a good idea either from a practical or a design standpoint. The placement of a tv for viewing comfort should be approximately at a height where the midpoint of the screen is at eye level or a little higher when you are seated; yours is probably 5' higher than it should be. The only thing I would do to that fireplace is paint the mantel -- maybe a semi-gloss black -- and then consider putting one, nice vase on it....See Morecarolb_w_fl_coastal_9b
