I need some decorating help (wrt curtains especially)
Comments (15)Hi Tisha, Here's some more ideas, don't know if you can use them, you've gotten so many good ones already. How about painting the headboard, one of the colors from the quilt? The dark brown would be as assertive as the black, and might overwhelm those quieter colors. You could take a sham to the paint store, to help find a good color. Would you like the headbord and curtains to match, or contrast? While you are there, you could also get a 4$ sample of a custom wall color, that seems quilt friendly, but shy. Besides the yellow, you might also try a VERY soft shade of that blue/green, to blend the quilt tones and denim. Yellows [and greens] are so tricky, and usually look much stronger than you expect, once they are up. Spread out that wall paint sample across an inner corner, to see if it's too strong. With that sham and the paint choices in the car, look at fabrics- go to a fabric store, and, where they have sheets on sale, like tj's, or a job lot store. When you find something that looks like a curtain possibility, compare it to the quilt sham, and paint shades. You will find it much easier, if you have them there for reference, especially if there is pattern. If you have something denim to wear, that is similar in tone to your coverlet, that'll help even more. That denim is going to be around, so you may as well take it into account. Strips of denim, with ribbon trim that match a color[s] from the quilt, might work for small items like tie backs or throw pillows. Try repeating soft colors in different widths, add stronger colours in narrower widths. Add areas of curtain fabric, to denim? Scout for a rug[s] too. In the nook, a cushion would be durable, in denim. Could huge throw pillows, make it into somewhere that you would like to curl up to read, with a foot stool/ or shelf? I like to take things to the visual boundary, when it's so close, to avoid distraction. So, with the wonderful sketches that coconut made, I would probably nudge the edges of the fabric and/or the valences, to the ceiling, wall [and nook ledge]. Those edges might just work better as shown though, kinda like a frame. It would depend on the shapes and colors. Those are pretty lamps, but the scale seems short for the room, and the shades are very curvy, too. Consider making the lamp bases ~4-6" taller,[add wood block bases?]. Then! try shades that are also taller than the ones you have by 3-5". A plain shape of shade, like a tall thin drum, would go well with the other strong plain shapes in the room. Ask the shade saleslady, [k'mt?] if you can bring them back if they don't work. You will have taller, thin, lamps with plain shades. Find colors in tones that work for you, and group those colors, in proportions that make you happy. That, and the taller lamps [ with the plain shades] will really transform the room. The find yer style gal, on HandG, has a good way to look at a room. It might be more fun, if you can bring a friend with you when you shop for colors and fabrics. Good luck, and give yourself credit for tackling such a big project....See MoreCan you help me figure out what type of professional I need to consult
Comments (30)as far as I understood they repair while they mitigate..I suppose different crews at work, but one can't just remediate without replacing whatever's damaged. one needs to get estimates though-what's happenning, where, what it entails..it is overwhelming, we also spent couple months just being in shock and drinking wine, even though ours didn't present any safety issues unless being disturbed. Then one takes a deep breath and starts calling.. and sources for leaks should be all taken care of, no question I'd start with a mold guy and a GC..to put some picture together insulate the house..drywall comes out for that..you might be surprized at the state of black paper too..we patched ours, overall was not bad.. or else would be easier to take the house down..asbestos-we had to remediate it 'cause was everywhere..but yes, now the house' s insulated)) and we're in Southern CA, no snow-but makes sense for a house to be insulated. roof-was still fine yet we did have to change lots of stuff there since was at the end of its cycle. and we didn't have leaks, mold, etc nothing structural too. and wiring was fine. still..life experience I could easily live without lol but hey..everything learned in comparison. I had this phrase I'd be telling myself "Nobody shoots yet? okay then". I got it in my head to automatic level. It popped up even when I didn't need it. Like a broken record. Yet it helped. In order to do stuff one needs to keep himself functional..)) as for Craigslist etc don't worry..half of our place is craigslisted, etsied, ebayed, blahblah. One of the best affordable ways to create, with time, a cozy and meaningful place for your family. So as to that part-a day will arrive and you'd be, like, wow, all the stories I have in our house....See MoreHelp! Do my walls need some decor?
Comments (24)I agree with Sophie Wheeler (of course!) I am not much on curtains unless you need them for privacy -they are just big dust catchers, something to vacuum or clean, the pets think you put them there for their personal amusement, and if anyone has asthma, it's a bad idea. I don't know if it is the lighting or my computer monitor or my eyes, but your coffee table and end table look a lot like driftwood to me. Are they supposed to? Or are they really brown? Can you sand them and make them brown? And really, having all three as a set is too matchy-matchy. Why not try something interesting and textural for a coffee table like a big round brass tray from India or Morocco on wooden legs or a colored ottoman whose colors you pick up in your throw pillows, such as a royal blue ottoman, or red, or rich brown tufted leather? You can put a big tray on top of that for serving. I love a beautifully made wooden tray, especially inlaid trays, like the ones from Spain or the Middle East. Or you can have made a sliding wood table (on wheels) to go on top of the ottoman if only a tray on top of the ottoman makes you nervous. Are those live plants? If so great! If not, immediately get rid of them and buy live ones. There are some marvelous indoor live ones that have color too, such as coleus. Do you collect anything that is natural that has texture and shape like seashells or pinecones or butterflies? Those are things that you can put on a tray on your coffee table. I would not have 4 pillows that are exactly that are exactly the same, that is a snooze, and the white pillows add nothing at all. I would use color, but if you are really allergic to color, than please, use fabric with texture! Velvet, silk, leather, leather and suede woven together, strips of silk fabric woven together, nubby weaves or knits, embossed velvets. These all come in your shades of whites, greys and blacks to give way more interest. if you don't know where to start with color, the best way is to go to the best ,( and that doesn't mean the most expensive, that means the most reputable) rug dealer around, and buy a knock your socks off gorgeous hand-knotted Persian carpet. Determine the size you need, pick out a few, have them all delivered to your home, and see how they all look and then decide. (Have a few really critical friends or relatives over too, since I can't be there :) Then once you do that, you can pick out a color or two to be your accent colors, and pick your throw pillows from that, and voila your color work is done, you just need to switch out the tables to something with more warmth....See MoreNeed help decorating my newly renovated basement space.
Comments (8)you really need some art. and something in the corner. Try this I gave you a natural texture type of pendant light. I think it works better than the oversized floor lamp you have Similar room styles or, try a lamp like this. BTW, did you knwo you can top your console w/a piece of lumber? just cut it to fit and use adhesive to set. style like shown here. or, style your console like this. you could use some greenery. large art, tall plant, assorted pillows w/color don't hang the art too high. from floor to center should be 56" you could do something like this on either side of the console or:...See More- last year
