RED Oak stain Looks Orange!? Help!

help! we areived hime today to see our new floors and they look awful. the samples below were done on our hardwood red oak floors and looked great. we went with ”wethered oak” by duracell. the samples appeared light brown wirh rich warm undertones, However, the floora didnt turn out the same as the samplea? The bottom picture is what our floors actually look like now. What do we do?

any recommendations or help is apprecuated. they have applied 2 coats currently. our kitchen cabinets get installed this Wednesday. .

You'll never have no 'red' in red oak. I'm not a fan of all the grey floors that have been installed. Show a photo of the whole space. I bet it is lovely.

They must have done something differently in order for it to have different results. All you can do is tell them it does not match the sample they provided and you want the color of the sample. Store the cabinets in a garage or in a space that is not affected by floor work. It's up to the flooring contractor to figure out the mess he/she created. By the looks of it, the sample boards were not sanded before applying the stain.

We have white oak kitchen cabinets with a very light stain. Our house was originally built with white oak floors, which we thought were red oak. We had to replace quite a few boards and we used red oak so now we have a red and white oak floor (definitely by accident). I'm with you on the white oak being nicer. Despite the efforts of our floor refinisher, the red oak still has a pinkish cast to it. In order to make the white and red oaks really blend, we would have had to go with darker stain on the floor, which we didn't want. Have you checked local cabinet makers for prices for white oak cabinets. We found that some could only get red oak and others could only get white oak. The guy who could only get white oak wasn't any more expensive than the guy who could only get red oak.

I got a bunch of stains to test, and while the walnuts and oaks match, we hate the dark grain they make in the oak. It just looks too much like 80's oak furniture. Some things about stain are so puzzling. - I have no idea why even a light stain like golden oak makes the grain dark, when golden pecan and colonial maple don't. Do some intentionally have lighter bases but darker solids so they deposit the dark into the grain? We much prefer the no-grain ones. - Why do golden pecan and colonial maple look indistinguishable on my sample, but light years different on the Minwax color chips of the same wood? Well those are rhetorical questions, unless someone knows the answer. Since the teak floors get more orange as they age, and the Minwax color chip shows colonial maple as more orange than golden pecan, maybe I'll use colonial maple.

@duvall15501 its been a while since you posted and i came across you post trying to figure out what to put on my red oak floors. we have had a terrible go of it and now looking into bona Jacobean, bona medium brown, duraseal dark walnut and interested in the bona antique which you have posted. what did you end up selecting and are you happy with yoir floors?

Does stained red ash resemble stained red oak?

Yes. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish ash from red oak. Especially if all you have to look at is a short section of board. Finely tuned eyes will see the difference but that isn't most people.

Im wondering if the they switched the sample names by accident? the other color we considered was ”Rustic Beige”.

I see different boards took the stain in their own way. Even in the sample there is variation. Which is normal for red oak. If you go darker, the red will lessen. But I like the color as is fine.

Im not aure the pictures are showing just how much orange and salmon are coming thru in person? i know based the cabinet colora being installed, the drapery, wallpaper and interior colors already ordered and picke out, the floor color cant stay the way it is.

if two coats on duracell ”weathered oak” have been applied, can a darker coat of something be applied to tone it down? i read that wood can only absorb so much stain? or do we have to re-sand?

As long as there's no topcoat, I don't think a darker stain would be a problem.

Again, just show the sample up against your current floor, and request a re-do. Why do you want to compromise with a darker stain?

It's a redo, unless you want to use poly shade over it.

I just read a blog on Pine and Prospect Home on how they stained red oak with no orange. It came out a gorgeous beige wheat color. Very pretty. The blog has all the details of stain brand and name but basically the stain looked green and the green canceled out the red. They did a 50/50 mix of stain and mineral spirits to make stain a lil lighter so that's something you could play with to get shade you'd want.
