Best hardwood engineered light oak, wide, 1/2 min thick, made in USA?

Hi guys im trying to find the very best hardwood engineered wood that has the following criteria:

*at least 1/2 thick

*inner plywood (not MDF)

*truly sourced/made in USA or canada (basically just not anywhere w weird chemicals)

*at least 5 to 7 inches wide

*neutral light oak color

*smooth to the touch BUT matte (so not slippery for my dogs.

*a classic but modern light oak (that very neutral look you see just about eveywhere)

*large brand name so no trouble w future repairs or sourcing

*something our store and installer (w limited updated looks) can have shipped easily to them

*all install options available (glue float nail)

*something w a lifetime or decent warranty

does anyone know of a fail proof and really popular HW engineered that meets the criteria ? thanks so much!!!

There are so many good options, my friend. I would spend some time on Mirage, Lauzon and Mercier websites. Made in Canada. Their 3/4" white oak engineered wood floors with thick wear layers are my favorites. Check back if you have any questions. Good luck!

Does not exist. Keep in mind, flooring is the most abused building material in the home. I would suggest adjusting your expectations.

Everlast Floors in Whippany, NJ did a terrible job with my installation and they damaged my file cabinets and scratched my floors and I can go on and on with the problems that I have had with the store. I wish I installed the 5.25" wide long boards Amendoim instead or the Brazilian Cherry long boards that were wide with a different store that takes pride in doing a good job and stands by their work. They were also supposed to do the installation in August 2014 but knew the wood was backordered so waited a few days so I could not cancel the contract to tell me and then told me that the wood would be there by the end of August but to wait until Gary would come back from vacation to cull the wood and be there. Gary the Salesman came back and then the wood still was not here and when it arrived I was trying to finish up my 10-15-2014 deadline and had to put off doing the floors. I can't believe how many damaged file cabinets I have and scratches on my floors and boards lining up with seams in a pattern that the installer admitted and the poor quality shoe molding used that looks terrible. Please do not use this store. When I have time, I will be doing a poor review on Yelp about the store. The salesman is a Bully and signs off if I pay, "we will pay for the file cabinet damage to the broken drawer that the installers did to a cabinet and replace the T-Molding (they stole the one I bought in a prior year that I had in the garage as they bought wood of another species stained that was too short) and other promises that they broke. They waited so long to say they will be here so I could not stop payment on the credit card. The installers that hardly spoke English did a good job but the one that headed the team that was an employee that they paid as an independent contractor, left green tape (I bought as they ran out) underneath the shoe molding and I can't get it all out and did the pattern and admitted it and had no idea we had enough wood and did not listen to me and used boards I told him not to use on my floor. I am so unhappy. The worst part is they never sent me the insurance claim form that I requested so many times to file a claim and they lied about the pad being so warm that anything in addition would be overkill and they keep telling me the owner of the store would call me back but he ignores the situation and I had to stop calling as it was my tax season. Just warning others.

ajsmama, your Brazilian Cherry floors are beautiful and so is your trim and steps. Thanks for sharing. The trim looks so nice since I am used to half my carpet covering my almost 3.5" trim. Laurie, That price sounds great and the height and width sounds perfect. I will have to look into this since I want my baseboard to be self-primed. My floors are now totally bare. My brother owed me and he finally decided to help me out by removing the carpet, pad, tackless, and trim (he labeled the trim to save but it is not in the best of shape). He left the trim and quarter rounds on the Porcelain tile foyer areas and told me the flooring guy will have to decide what to do with that since my brother sells, repairs and installs carpet for a living. He removed all the bad CVT tile in the utility room so someone can install tile that was not water damaged and cracking. He left the destroyed trim there that is so water damaged. The flooring guy can't come by until Thursday. I have to try to clean the floor again since it was SO dirty. I got all the nails off the floor and one layer of dust, plaster and dirt and the little Styrofoam balls that must have fell from the ceiling and were under the padding under the carpet from 20 years ago! I swept so now tomorrow I will vacuum. I hope a painter can start before the floor is installed. Squirrel, I agree with you that I invested so much money into a new floor that I also feel I would be happier with new taller trim or at least new trim. Thank you everyone! Anymore input and/or pictures would be appreciated. Thanks for being there for me. My little dogs are in my bedroom with me since that is where my computer is now. I can't work and I need to work. I ran out of toner and all my files are downstairs in the hot garage. I really wish someone would start my floor first before the painting since the dogs and me are all stressed out seeing the ugly cement floor everywhere downstairs. I wish I was also removing the torn linoleum kitchen floor but that is a project for next year, along with a new dishwasher since mine is almost 20 years old and leaks and does not match my stainless steel French Door refrigerator.

Choosing the right flooring type isn't enough for your living condition. You will have to consider the types of cut: flat sawn, rift and quarter sawn, quarter sawn or live sawn. Quarter sawn and rift & quarter sawn will be best choices, because expansion and contraction is along the thickness of the wood. You will need climate control all year round. 70 degrees at 40 % relative humidity is where you want to be throughout the year. The use of a humidifier/dehumidifier will be needed year round. Although, engineered flooring is more stable than solid. Using the wrong wood specie in your living condition can run the risk of de-laminating with engineered wood. If, the top veneer is more or less stable than it's core and backing. You will experience de-laminating in extreme humidity swings. Take in account of what the engineered flooring is constructed of: mdf or plywood. The width of the flooring will account for how much expansion and contracting also. 2 1/4" strips are the most stable. As you go wider, expect to see more wider seasonal gaps. Proper acclimating is critical, should be performed with a moisture meter. For 2 1/4" strip flooring , sub-floor and flooring moisture should be within 4%. For all other widths 2% moisture differentiation is allowed or should not be exceeded. Don't forget proper expansion gaps, which is the thickness of your flooring, example: 3/4" thick = 3/4" gap. Sub-floor type and condition will affect the performance of wood floors. All this needs to be considered for the proper and successful performance of your wood floors.

A wide plank (anything 5" or wider is considered "wide plank) has plenty of requirements. If you are looking at a nail down floor, you will need to work with glue assist. This drives the cost of installation up. I'm a little confused about the $15/sf installed quote. Is that for a 7" wide SITE FINISHED engineered hardwood? Or is that for a factory finished plank? If it is the cost for the SITE FINISHED than I'm concerned with such a low price. Ya. I said low. These beautiful, wide plank site finished engineered hardwood floors should have a purchase price around $15. Cost of install/finishing would then be added to that price. They are MAGNIFICENT. They are the best of the best (especially the US or Canada Made products). Please explain the TYPE of install (nail down, floating, etc) your type of SUBFLOOR and whether or not your quote was for factory finished or site finished. Oh. And your location would also help. What is cheap for one area could be top of the market in another region.

I am a recent customer of Uptown Floors and have only good things to say about the flooring I purchased from them for our new home built last year. The customer service and communication during the process is excellent. I have a large golden retriever and the floors and finish are looking great. I did a great deal of research and watched a lot of Ken's videos online. I also did research on the company in Ohio that manufactures and mills the flooring. I had to convince my builder to let me get our floors from this company and they were impressed. The guy who installed the flooring couldn't believe how nice the millwork and quality were. I went with the Hickory because I wanted the harder wood, but Uptown Floors also sells Oak. You will not be disappointed. I compared the samples I purchased from Uptown Floors to the best I could find being sold by local flooring companies and National brands, and there was no comparison. I almost went with Somerset engineered flooring, but the wear layer just wasn't thick enough considering I have a dog. I feel like I did my homework and hit the flooring jackpot when I stumbled upon Uptown Floors here on Houzz and took the time to check them out. www.uptownfloors.com. I felt their prices were fair and I got a lot better product for my money than I would have gotten by going with the companies the builder was suggesting. I got a much thicker engineered floor 3/4" with a 5.8mm wear layer that can be sanded multiple times in the future if need be. I guess being born and raised in Ohio, I knew if the Amish manufactured the flooring, it would be excellent. It is.

Also, it was a little scary trying to time the shipment of the flooring to my new home at the time the builder was ready to install the floors, but Ken Fisher worked with my General Contractor and made sure the flooring arrived when it was needed and not before. I won't lie, I was nervous ordering my new home's hardwoods off the internet, but it was actually the only thing about my new home build that went smoothly and turned out perfectly.
