I want to paint the fireplace.What color should I choose?

I'm in the process of painting the whole basement and I have this old stone fireplace that looks odd with the rest of the colors. I don't really want to replace it, I would prefer to paint it but I'm open to more suggestions.

To my eye, painted stone fireplaces always look bad. I'd keep the stone as is, once you've got everything in place, it might blend right in. Your paint and carpet look a bit cooler than the stones, but if you add in some baskets, wood, etc, it might bridge that gap. Lucky you to have a fireplace in the basement!

Hi Jane..., Sheen choice is such a subjective thing obviously. Some like a "glow" on the walls from nightstand lamps, etc., & others' don't. Some feel Flat finishes look rich, but cleanability drops off. Overall, the Eggshell SHEEN (not color) seems the most popular in our store. Consider your cleaning-styles/frequency too. If you're a fussy cleaner, Flat might not be for you; UNLESS you use a Premium-flat like C2 or ACE'S Sensations flat with Scotchguard-VERY cleanable. Don't be scared to "go deep" with color, if only on an accent wall. Deeper colors in Bedrooms can feel very cozy & warm...kind of the way a Bedroom should be! Be aware though, some dark colors need a dark primer under them. TWO topcoats still needed though!! (Of course, big color changes usually lead to new drapes, etc., etc.,.... ;-) Faron

Thanks kswl, it looks better than it actually is :( We purchased it about a year ago and have been slowly upgrading the inside...think pine paneling everywhere! If I leave the trim brown with the brown windows, should I paint the second storey ones white? The dark brown seems to make them look so small. powermuffin, the blue roof was definetly not our purchase, oh, I so wish the previous owner had gone for red or even green. Fortunately (financially speaking) the roof isn't going to wear out anytime soon, so I'm stuck with it. I hadn't thought of a smokey green. I'll have a look at some. Just so you don't think I'm not completely out to lunch, here is my yellow house inspiration picture :) Of course, this house is a whole lot nicer than mine!

Yknow, IMHO, I wish we all could drop the "D" word from our vocabulary. If we love it , if its well made, if its functional - then a place can be found for it, period. In other words - your china cab is just fine, and it does look good on the side rather than viewed head on. That said of course we like our rooms freshened up now and then - but I think you can jazz it up in other ways incl choosing a new color ILOVE greens/browns/tans, but the pea soup color Im kind of tired of. (or so it looks on my monitor anyway, which has been known to be wrong.) Definitely think about going deeper richer. Dont know if Penny's or Anglo's deep dark colors are good for you but it gives you an idea at least of what deeper/richer could do for you. If all else fails maybe you could just take the living room color and just go a few steps darker/more intense with it. Let the DR be cozy and intimate complete w/ a big china cabinet - why not? The DR should relate well to the LR, and that would be one way of doing it. Minor quibble - I would think about that wall space where the china cab was - is there a third pic that could fit in there? With cabinet moved, that wall becomes very significant. Not liking just the two pics , needs to be 3 I think..... Or some other wall decor or arrangement .... minor thing, so perhaps just wait for the inspiration or right thing to come along.

Kathy, you have been given excellent advice in each of the above comments To find a color in the same basic hue, check the paler colors on the color chart for SW 6223; if you want a coordinating color, ask for that info at your paint store. Given that this is a north facing room please be sure you want a cool color like blue as opposed to a warmer color such as a warm cream,yellow or even a soft pink color.

I agree that the fireplace is fine, but the wall color is not working with it. Avoid the gray and warm up the walls with something in the beige family ( a color from the stone).

Painted stone/brick is a FAD that will FOREVER date your home. 'Oh look someone back in 2022 thought THAT was high style" will be what realtors in your home's future will hear.

I agree that painted stone rarely looks good.

It seems like the wall color is the thing that doesn't work here--the carpet as well as the fireplace doesn't like it. If you're willing to (re)paint the walls a slightly browner gray, everything might be a smidge more harmonious.

Stone is beautiful in part because of it's variation in tone which gets completely obliterated with paint. In my personal opinion, painted stone fireplaces generally look cheap or dated. Instead I would recommend trying a greige/taupe wall paint color that is more harmonious with the stone of the fireplace and the warmer carpet color. Additionally, you can always repaint the painted walls if you don't like the color, but you can't really go back once you ruin stone with paint.

Embrace the natural stone, don’t ruin it permanently over a fad.
