Flooring Dilemma

Hi everyone,

I am really stuck on my flooring colour. My kitchen island cabinetry (and some tall cabinets behind it will be hale navy island and the perimeter cabinets (along with an open pantry nook) will be a Chantilly Lace white colour. I was looking at Centura's Uniquestone-the colour is called Silk in glossy. I really like the stone and it looks great with the white. However, I'm not sure when it's next to the blue. I'm afraid it pulls too bluey! Also, my countertop will be Quorastone Calcatta Firenze, and I'm not sure how well it pairs with this floor either. I don't have a good eye for colour so would appreciate any help I can get from this community. I have included a picture to show you what I mean.

I should mention that I am choosing porcelain over wood as I have wood (oak) in the hallway/study area just outside my kitchen.

IMO all the flooring the same is always the best option so the same oak as the floor next to the kitchen

I think with all those together, your kitchen will look cold. It's a cool gray, and you are right that the blue brings out those tones in the tile. And it looks like your counter is also a neutral-cool white with cool gray.

I agree that extending/matching the hardwood would be amazing if possible! Look how the wood in the background of your photo really sings with the blue and white!

What is the overall style and age of your house? Also considering the pattern and texture for the floor -- since your quartz has strong veining, going in a different direction for the floor would be well worth exploring. Solid color tile? I also think slate or slate-look (the more solid dark ones, not the mottled brown ones) look great next to wood. What about a terra cotta, on the less rustic side (like Bedrosians makoto in terra cotta), could do well with your oak? A soft white with a little texture, again not stone-veining texture, might also work well to bridge the oak floor with the bright white kitchen counter.

Unless you are matching the finger parquet, you would go ahead and install a white oak floor that matches the kitchen (and the golden retriever:-). That will allow the parquet to be the "accent" all by itself. The second suggest I have....look to have the parquet refinished. It's looking a little tired. A little old. If the parquet is thick enough for a sand/refinish, I would look at doing that at the same time. You might just find the REAL colour of the wood underneath that old solvent based finish. The kitchen hardwood looks to be in good shape. It might need a buff and coat (a little abrasion and then a coat of new finish applied to perk it up), it might not. Again, while the professionals are in, have them look at it to see if it needs attention as well. With the work that probably needs to be done, you will most likely be out of the house for a week or two anyways...might as well get EVERYTHING done all at once to save you from having to bring them back in 5 years to do the kitchen/parquet.

Your home is beautiful. I think it'd look nicer matched color-wise to the parquet. Does it attach to the kitchen as well though? I actually really like the parquet - I have a small landing with parquet but it's oak that lightened over the years was wondering about refreshing it & making it a bit darker. Is yours old original parquet & have you ever done that?

Don't do fake wood next to the pine (and keep the pine!). If you can't match it, tile, tile look, or something like Marmoleum or cork in a coordinating color would be acceptable. Wood of a different type stained to match could be okay with a clever pattern change. Look at really old floor styles for inspiration, where you might have inset borders around and between rooms. It can look good.

Looks like you've been fighting this space for a long time, but I think if you want it to look nice, you need to work with it for what it is, and it will "show" much better when it comes time to sell. Take away the console table entirely. Is it really necessary to have that dining table where it is? If so, get a square glass one and fascinating modern chairs. If you don't need a dining area there, get deep lounge chairs and a cocktail table. Whichever, get rid of the mirror and put very large art there. I would get a curved lush sofa -- even serpentine -- to embrace the piano area and add plants -- maybe even a tree. I'd get a great floor lamp for the piano. I'd put down a rug to define the piano area. I personally would want to change the front door to natural wood and get a stunning foyer light. No round entry rug. After getting rid of the console table I'd probably take away that one art piece and run a gallery of large framed photos down the wall. It's meant to be a grand entry and lounge. Silly, okay, but it's never going to be a family room. Presumably there are other places to eat meals and watch TV?

Thank you Rebasheba. You bring up some very helpful points. I am now looking to change my counter selection since I was told that the company is not very reliable. I was looking at Ceasartone Calacatta Nuvo but I haven't been able to see a sample yet. I'm concerned the white might be too dark with the chantilly lace. However, I like that it has a much softer veining. So if anyone has paired these two together I would love to hear from you or see a picture.

I don't wish to extend the hardwood floor that I already have as it's that orangey yellow oak that I don't like and would eventually like to change. Maybe I should have done this first!?!

My goal is to try to update the kitchen and make it a little more modern. My home is a tudor style and it is over 30 years old. I like a cool kitchen but I want to be able to balance it out so it's not too cold. My kitchen knobs are brass and paint colour could warm it up overall. The oak floors are not in the same room. They are in the hallway but I have doors to close it off. My thinking was to pick a floor with grey to match the grey veining in the countertop. I am worried that a white floor would not be enough contrast with the white cabinets. I'm just getting a little burn't out and utterly confused!! Thought I had if figured out but it seems I'm going backwards and not forwards !! Thanks for the help!
