Old home flooring dilemma-old parquet meets new flooring

Hi All,

we live in a great old home that has dark parquet tiles in the DR, Office and hallways and light red oak in the kitchen. We want to replace the old carpet throughout the rest of the home with wood floors. Would you stain the new floors dark and try and match the parquet (not sure of the wood used in the parquet.. Maybe teak?) or contrast a golden oak color like the kitchen with a dark feature strip border?

Unless you are matching the finger parquet, you would go ahead and install a white oak floor that matches the kitchen (and the golden retriever:-). That will allow the parquet to be the "accent" all by itself.

The second suggest I have....look to have the parquet refinished. It's looking a little tired. A little old. If the parquet is thick enough for a sand/refinish, I would look at doing that at the same time. You might just find the REAL colour of the wood underneath that old solvent based finish.

The kitchen hardwood looks to be in good shape. It might need a buff and coat (a little abrasion and then a coat of new finish applied to perk it up), it might not. Again, while the professionals are in, have them look at it to see if it needs attention as well.

With the work that probably needs to be done, you will most likely be out of the house for a week or two anyways...might as well get EVERYTHING done all at once to save you from having to bring them back in 5 years to do the kitchen/parquet.

Thanks! Yes. We are absolutely planning on refinishing the existing wood at the same time. I'm more worried that the big contrast between those tiles and a honey colored oak will look cheap... Others have suggested pulling out the tiles and doing oak throughout. This is such a big project and investment! The tiles are pretty...here's a close up...just not sure that it will look rich next to a different floor

Is it an open concept living room/kitchen? If so, I would replace the flooring in both the kitchen and living room to match. If that's not in the budget right now, one thing you can do is to scrape out the top layer of grout (they have a tool to do this at Home Depot) and then you can apply a darker grout on top of it. I did this in a shower once and it worked great. There are some carpeted mats you can get in the kitchen that have foam in them and they help tremendously, so you could try those and see if they help. Then when you are ready to replace the living room carpet, you could replace the kitchen to match as well, giving a more consistent look.

You won't need much (if any) matching "patina" on the new floors if you're determined to sand the old floors. Sanding removes most of it, along with most decorative stains. You may still have some stains like ink or old standing water marks on the old floor, and of course deep gouges, etc., will still be there. But you shouldn't have too much trouble matching the floors if they are sanded and sealed at the same time. If you feel there is still need of some additonal softening of the boundaries, a threshold works for a door way. If it's in the middle of the room (like when you take out a wall) an area rug over the meeting line - even if it doesn't cover it clear across the room - will pretty much fool the eye if the two floors have similar color and not too different widths and patterns. I would leave it alone. But, it you must, get the terms right. Here is an explanation of the difference between quarter round and shoe molding: https://www.bobvila.com/articles/shoe-molding/ Btydrvn's 'inverted corner round' is called cove molding. That is not a typical use for cove molding because cove is more fragile and subject to damage. Also there is more surface to collect dust & grime. Typically, door case moldings are thicker than base moldings so there is a reveal where base butts up to casing. (Often accomplished by using plinth blocks.) It appears that your base & casing are flush. You can't wrap the casing with shoe molding & it's cousins because it would interfere with the operation of a door. Ending it at the edge of the door case molding would look especially clutzy because your base & casing are the same thickness. So I would leave it be & live with the gap. Typical plinth block/ no shoe molding. Note the reveal where base butts up to the plinth block. Alternative if the gap really bothers you is to scribe the base to the floor. We did this on a wall in a bathroom because I hate shoe, quarter round, etc.,etc,.etc. Because the gap was in direct close up sight to the toilet where it was impossible to ignore. :-)

BTW, that kitchen floor looks lie Red Oak, not White Oak.

The way the dining room is separated from the rest, I think it would look fine being different. OTOH hand I always pitch the advantages of flow and continuity with having the same floor throughout.

And BTW, if you have four cartons of that Teak parquet I have a customer that would love it dearly.

jfcwood! can you re-use it? It is in the DR, hallway and office and we are in Yakima, Wa. The kitchen is red oak and we decided to do the rest of the house in white oak to match the dog. :)... the kitchen will be a little warmer, but still blend well, i think... trying to work on a stain color now.. :)
