Landscape Design Design Dilemma

Artificial Turf seam

Hi all, we had about 400 sq ft of artificial turf installed yesterday. Reputable company. This morning, I noticed this seam. Is this an acceptable seam, or should I have them come out and try to make it less noticeable? Not sure if I'm being overly picky, or if I should give it a few weeks to settle and see how it looks.

IMO you need to have some sort of containment for thegravel so maybe share a bit about how this was installed as for the seam maybe wait a bit to see if it blends in.

Hi Patricia, there is 1 inch wide redwood bender board installed between the rocks and the turf. I will need to go out and rake the rocks a bit to smooth those out. They leveled the ground, packed sand/material down, wet it frequently, then nailed the turf, also put some glue at the seam

I have two areas, one is 300sqft with irregular pavers with 6in gaps and they already did it with strips. seams arent obvuous but online i keep reading that strips will break down over time. driveway is about 80sqft and hasnt heen done yet so trying to figure out if i should make them install it as a large piece. pavers range from 2x4 to 4x4

Look at the manufacturer's recommended installation method. The products we spec, the base is similar to a paver base, with compacted gravel. I wouldn't personally do it on DG because I wouldn't want to warranty it, but if they stand by it, it'll be cheaper.

Gonna agree 100% with the first poster. A DIY installation of an artificial lawn is certainly doable but one heck of a lot of work to do it right. And if you don't do it right it will look a mess, won't hold up well and you have just thrown away all that time, effort and $$. Do it right or hire a professional. If you check the math, the $19K is not an unreasonable price tag. It is about midway between the national average ($12.33/sf) and the high range of $18.75/sf. I would only just add that $2-3/sf for artificial turf puts it at the low end of the quality scale so that's another thought for consideration. Is it possible to reduce the square footage or put it to another use (planting beds, patio or other hardscaping) to lower the cost of lawn installation?

Well, had the youngest baby's BD party on our AT and it was a big success! We ended up paying about $5,000 for the yard. The AT has a cooling agent (or the under stuff does) and the kids and dogs have so far been loving the yard! The dog actually spends a lot of his life living on this turf! When the temps get above 80*, I go out and test the turf, and it's just fine. The babies are happy and so am I! I still have some real lawn in the front yard, just trying to help with drought conditions that will (even though they say it's over in CA) continue in CA. I'm pleased! Enjoy your day!

I am really have no real experience with fake grass but I am putting it on my deck on the ladder side of our pool since that part of the deck gets so hot you can't walk on it. I guess I will see what the seams look like there when done.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting, you might want to test out a piece first ... some artificial grass gets just as hot as other surfaces. I looked into it for a dog area recently and they have come out with some versions that are supposed to stay a bit cooler than the original versions.

We had artificial grass installed in the backyard of our previous home. No seams were visible.

Like with laying a real sod lawn, seams can be visible for a period of time. Use and care/grooming should make them unnoticeable shortly.
