Has anyone ordered from Swallowtail Gardens?
Comments (7)Hybrid seed would be listed as F1 in your seed catalog. I gave just a couple of examples of open pollinated seed. The reason for growing sweet peas is, of course, the fragrance. When seeds are hybridized, the scent is often lost. With sweet peas, you would always want to grow the older heirloom varieties -- very fragrant. I don't think there is a hybrid available for bachelor buttons. We always want these in our early season bouquets because they are just happy little flowers. BTW Fedco Seed carries Black Gem. It's a ruffled, deep, dark maroon, hard to find cultivar. Teresa, the sound you hear is Trish scratching Hyacinth Bean vine off the seed list, and replacing it with Purple Bell Vine, Rhodochiton. It is unique; and, not something I've noticed in bouquets at market. I don't know about the vase life; but, I'm willing to trial it. Wondering if it has a fragrance. Comments (2)Seedmama - I think they are closing by choice. The few times we've stopped by there, no one was there to assist us or we couldn't even tell they were open. The only time we've actually done busines with them was this spring when we bought a load of mulch. The owner of K&K told me tonight that the property went up for sale a couple of months back. He also said the ad on craigslist has been there for at least 3 weeks to a month. And you can bet I'll come back to report what I find! I did ask about fall bedding plants tonite and he said it would be around the 3rd week of September before they had any pansies or mums for fall flowering. He acknowledged I could probably find them at the box stores around Sept. 1, but he's found for our area that it's best to wait unti even the first week of October to plant those to insure they'll be healthy enough to return in the spring. Gee, isn't it nice to have a retailer that understands and caters to our climate? Beats the heck out of the box stores! Paula...See MoreHas anyone ordered from Burgess Seed & Plant Co.?

Comments (20)I bought a Japanese maple from them last fall, planted it within 24 hours. It was dormant, but seemed to be OK. This spring, there were buds. The leaves were slow to emerge from the buds, though (other Japanese maples in the neighborhood were in full leaf before the buds started opening). And then about six weeks ago, everything went dead. The buds/leaves seemed dead, but the trunk was still green, so I did not (yet) despair. I made sure it was watered once a week. At first, it looked like there might be new buds, but those have not materialized, and the trunk is now black. In short, the tree never leafed out. I contacted them, and they said their policy is to not provide refunds after 48 hours of receipt of the tree. I have bought plants regularly from a handful of places, and this is the first time I have had anyone refuse to either replace or refund. More than $200 down the drain. No leaves ever. I will not be buying from Plant Lust again....See Morelindalana 5b Chicago
