Has anyone grown a Ylang Ylang plant from seed?
Comments (39)Hello Angelsmell, I'm reading all these posts with great interest. Cananga is a native here in northern Australia but I can't seem to find var. fruticosa anywhere but I'm not going to stop trying;). Perhaps I can shed some light from my experience. I tried for ages with seed from exchanges, clubs, trades etc. I was never able to get them to germinate. Tried scarifying, acid treatment, giberrelic acid, even tried feeding some to the chooks (sorry, chickens) to see if they would germinate in the droppings. No good. Finally got on to the bloke who is the head of the seed collection dept. for Queensland parks and wildlife. Turns out that seed is only viable for a very short time. I got some from him and planted it all into a large foam box, put it into my shadehouse and had seedlings on the warmer side of the box in three days. They grew very quickly but being an unnatractive seedling I had a hard time giving them away. Now that they are flowering everyone wants one!! I had no idea how long they would take to flower but was very pleasantly surprised to see flowers early in the second year from seed!! They are now three years old, nearly 20 feet tall and almost constantly covered in flowers. I will harvest my first seed from them this week. We had a cyclone (hurricane) through here about a year ago, it was preceded by three or four weeks of torrential rain which softened the ground around the tree's roots. The canangas were leaning over until they touched the ground in the wind. One was over the washing line so I tied it up using two strong ropes. This tree now grows extremely crooked while the ones I didn't tie up in the cyclone are straight as arrows. I keep meaning to cut the top 10 or 12 feet off it so it will grow straight again but I can't catch it out of flower for long enough. My wife and my neighbours would ban me from the chainsaw if I cut it while it was covered in flowers. I hope this helps a bit, we are pretty troical here and I don't know what your climate is like. Comments (14)I ordered my son's bed (a Wesley Allen) from them a few years ago and it's both well-made and attractive. The service and delivery were good, and having the bed customized to allow space for a trundle was not a problem at all. I do wish that I had asked for sample finishes to be sent prior to ordering, because the black iron finish that I ordered had a lot of silver in it and I prefer warmer tones. Also, it was a standard powder coat finish and very evenly applied, so my one regret is that the bed doesn't really look like a banged up, old antique, but most people would probably prefer that! With that being said, I think their real antique beds are a bit expensive, and since I wanted an antique iron bed for my daughter, I ended up ordering hers from Loading Dock Antiques, which IMO has antique beds more reasonably priced than either AIB or Cat House. Plus, it's a Mom and Pop type shop and they did a wonderful job refinishing the bed in a distressed, chippy finish and sending me emails and photos during the process. I can see reselling the Wesley Allen if my son doesn't want to keep it after he leaves the nest, but my daughter's bed will definitely be staying or passed down. I just ordered another iron bed (my third in two years!) for my guest room and again wanted an antique rather than a reproduction. However, since it's hard to find an antique daybed in a true twin size that works with a trundle, I ordered the iron and brass daybed from Charles P. Rogers, in the antique iron finish. A bit more expensive, but they use solid forged iron, pure brass, hand poured castings and hand applied finishes. I'm hoping the end result is a new bed that looks like and has the quality of an antique. We'll see in a month or so after it's delivered. So, that's my unsolicited review for 3 different iron bed companies! Have fun choosing one for your daughter - I just love iron beds for little girls (and big girls, but I'm stuck with my husband's choice of Mission oak). Comments (8)Hi, Steve/digit, Thanks for your response! I had to double check, but I read your responses/complaints about Evergreen. I decided to do a search about them over the weekend when I didn't get the email confirmation. Your past experience with them (from several years ago) was similar to the experience I had with them (many years ago). I received email confirmation of my order. Fast forward to present day... I didn't think twice about placing my order with them this season... until no email confirmation ever showed up in my email box. Then I started to worry and wonder. Having said that, I received my afternoon mail and found a yellow envelope from Evergreen! I was surprised to find it in my mailbox, but I do live in Los Angeles. I'm with you and wonder if they're just a little overwhelmed with business? I even asked for an email when they shipped but didn't get that, either. I really don't know if I'll order from them again especially if I can find the seeds elsewhere. I like communication/notification. Thank you all for your responses. Happy Growing, everyone! Comments (14)Fake seeds can also be seeds that are labeled as real plants, but don't fit what they are labeled as or they can be implied to be for plants that don't exist in reality. So I have seen comments from folks who ordered varied colored flowers such as lupines and got only the most common blue, or even folks who got a completely different species than what was ordered. I can find lupines in mixed color packets here, and I am in a quite rural area, so you may find them in your area. I typically won't buy from a supplier that has less than about 90% (or usually better) positive reviews. Prior to having access to online reviews (I've been gardening since before the internet) I was burned a few times ordering from garden suppliers who didn't supply what was ordered. I found it quite frustrating since my growing season is short, so I usually couldn't reorder and have time to replant. I guess the questions to ask yourself are, Will you be distressed if you get nothing you want for what you spend? and Will you be unhappy if you have to wait until next year to get the plants you want? If the answer is yes, based on the poor reviews, I would use another supplier....See MoreAl armagost
