Floor stain HELP !

About 10 years ago I had some red oak floors on my second floor refinished and stained. They used Minwax in a mixture of about 80% Dark Walnut and 20 % Ebony. I'm getting ready to refinish the rest of the house and the floor refinisher is using Bona. Any idea on what color(s) would be best, and the type of finish in the Bona brand - Thank you !

Depending on how you much area is already stained in a color that you would like, you really have two options:

1. Sand everything down and have it all done in the same color (you need to see samples on your floors in your light -- with the top coat applied).

2. Have your flooring professional make some samples for you to look at in your home in your light. Again you will have the top coat applied.

@kempek01 - I'm not looking to redo the other floors as it would be problematic. I will have the refinisher stain some boards for me. I was just wondering about the Bona product and if anyone

had any idea of the kinds of finish to use.

These very dark brown colors are very "in" right now so I'm not surprised that he is using a lot of that color. I'm afraid they are trendy. We just sold our house and the new owner had the floors redone in a very dark color from the Early American that we had used. there has to be a happy medium. Not so golden but not so dark. first, find out what brand he uses so you know what choices you should choose from. If it's Duraseal (or Minwax), then pick four or five colors you like and have him apply those colors as samples in your home. then you can make a rational choice.

Red oak flooring stain help!

Well said blondelle. I would stay away from gray on red oak. It can be done....but it takes an expensive professional to get it to the level you are looking for. It would be cheaper to spend more money on WHITE oak (as much as $2/sf more) and have it stained gray then try to reverse the reds in red oak to look 'gray'. If it were me, I would look to a lighter stain that has a GREEN base to it. The green will counter act the red to offer a COOL tone brown (like a mushroom brown). Turning red oak to a cool brown is much easier and often gives the homeowner the same CONCEPT (cool toned flooring) without stretching the talent of the flooring professional. And yes, gray as a design concept is at it's end.

Our flooring guy put down samples last night after their first round of sanding. He didn’t bring Warm Grey, so he’s putting a sample down this morning. I have red oak and plan to do Bona Traffic HD. I like grey with a hint of warmth. The previous owner did a Swedish finish on them (not sure which color stain) and they were very orange. This is a photo of my friend’s house with red oak and Duraseal Warm Grey. It turned out really nice. These are samples of my floor with the grey stains (L-R): boba grey, Duraseal dark grey, silver grey, rustic beige. Bottom: classic grey I have a section of new red oak, which is much more pink than the original boards (15 yrs old). In fact I don’t see any red in the original red oak boards.

Sheet vinyl can change colour (nicotine coloured stain) when exposed to one of it's 'no-no' enemies. Rubber and rubberized items are the BIGGEST no-no. Like a rubber backed bath mat. Heat (from a radiator, etc) can cause discolouration. And direct sunlight can cause discolouration. But once those things occur, then NEVER come out. Ever. You mention "We were told it was the wax ring, had that replaced and it happened again almost immediately." Does that mean it CLEANS UP? Can you clean away the stain?

In my experience Bona stains are not as intense and deep as their DuraSeal counterparts. I'm not sure if one could match the two.
