Help Picking a Color Stain for White Oak Floors
Comments (2)I now have in front of me two samples of stain over white oak. One dark, one medium shade. Coincidentally, Linen white is my wall color too. I agree that the dark stain may show imperfections. Kitchen cabs are off-white for me. I'm leaning towards the medium shade more that the darker shade. Contrast will be fine even with the medium stain against the white or off-white cabs. Sounds like you and I are thinking alike- dark sounds luxurious but a pain to deal with daily. If you need, I'll try to get a photo of the two samples my flooring guy has delivered. Chestnut would be what I'd call the lighter shade....See Morehelp me pick Bona stain color
Comments (9)You can't get samples, unless you know a floor finisher that has about six different stain colors in stock. Since you like the nutmeg idea, get some and see what it does on the wood. Then, look at the result and if you think it's not quite where you want it to be, then get a can of another color that is either is the ticket or maybe mixed with the nutmeg will get you closer. I think you can only get DriFast in quarts now, so the expense of getting a few cans to experiment with cost alot. You might be able to snag a DriFast stain fan set that will have the actual stains applied to oak. It might cost you a few bucks...or find a flooring materials dealer who sells Bona products and has a sample set you can get a close look at....See MoreHelp picking a floor stain color for red oak hardwoods!?
Comments (4)Hi John, do you have any photos of the space you could post? That might be helpful. In general, it's trickier to make wood floors work with wood stained cabinets, but I've done it. Since you don't want reddish floors, I'd aim for a cooler brown - more towards a walnut. I would NOT do ebony floors; those super-dark floors are impossible to keep looking clean. They show dust, lint, grass, etc. Also, what stain product is your contractor using? Most come in pre-mixed colors. That may determine the palette you have to choose from. Other stains can be tinted or adjusted if needed. Adding green to a stain color, for example, will help cut the red of the oak floors. You have to go easy though, you don't want to end up with a noticeable green tone. You're welcome to email me directly if you want more info - I don't check messages on here very often. Comments (68)Sorry that I'm just seeing your post. Wow,those are gorgeous! Congratulations on your dream floor. We hit a huge bump in the road . Our Shaw Vicksburg was in the house ready to be installed. As the old floor (laminate)was being taken up we found moisture along the floor plates in our concrete slab. Obviously we couldn't install hardwood. Fortunately we bought from a local retailer and they could accept returns. Of course we pay a restocking fee and another freight charge on new floors. Now,we are installing lvp. Not what I had dreamed of but at least no worries. It is pretty realistic looking....See MoreOak & Broad
