Toto Drake vs Drake II - Can't figure out the difference!

We want to replace the toilet in our upstairs guest bathroom. I am trying to decide between the Toto Drake model: CST775CEFRG#01 and the Toto Drake II model: CST453CEFRG#01. For the life of me, I cannot figure out what the difference between the two models is, except the Drake II is significantly more expensive. Both are 1.28 GPF two-piece round-bowl toilets with right hand lever. Their measurements are very nearly the same, both universal height, and both have Tornado Flush. I do see the tank shapes are slightly different, and their are other slight appearance differences, but they are similar enough that that is not important to me. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Here is a chart outlining the differences - as you can see there are some

I have a Toto toilet (not the Drake) and my toilet has the special "Sana" finish" as well as being low flow.

FWIW why are you considering a non-skirted style as having a skirted style was an absolute deal breaker for me when I was considering toilets. Much nicer looking as well as easier to clean. I also went with a one piece for the same reasons in terms of maintenance.

The chart indicates that there are aesthetic differences between the toilets as well.

- Thank you so much for your answer, Helen! I studied the toilet haven chart for which you gave a link. But it leaves me confused. One of the problems, I guess, is that it is reviewing a different model of the Drake. The model I am looking at, CST775CEFRG#01, appears to have the same Tornado flushing system, CEFIONTECT® ceramic glaze, and almost exactly the same size measurements as the Drake II. They both use 1.28 GPF. I've had the Toto Vespin 11 installed for a few weeks now. It is bascially a skirted version of the Drake 11. Love the Sanigloss, and compared to my two other dual flush toilets seems to flush better and no streaking. Have to admit have also not cleaned it...appears sparkling clean! Though I wonder if using a bidet seat and the additional water that produces has any bearing on that? I guess it's the water in the tank, not the water in the bowl that has any bearing? I just notice, that there appears to be more water sitting in bowl than in my other two. So does that water get calculated into the 1.28 or the 1.6 number, or does that number reflect just the volume of water in the tank? If there are two volumes flushed together, I would assume the Vespin/Drake has a larger total volume...

I've had a Drake II for about a year and I'm sold. The performance is everything I would expect from a (good) 1.6-gpf toilet and more. About the only thing I can note (I will try to do this delicately) is that sometimes waste that does not land in the water can stick surprisingly well. This does not happen often and I haven't figured out why it sometimes happens and sometimes does not (OK, I don't want to spend a lot of time thinking about it!). Even with that, the occasional extra cleanup that requires is more than made up for by not having all those holes get scaly and mildew-y. It truly is easier to clean than standard toilets.

Adding to this thread for anyone considering a DXV... I spent a lot of time considering plumbing fixtures for my home addition. I love the look and feel of the DXV Fitzgerald, and got the console for my powder room and undermount sink for my master, along with the matching toilets. The functionality seems great (nice flush and solid feel) however, on both toilets, the white porcelain is different colors -- the tanks are a grayish white compared to the rest. I'm still trying to work this out with Ferguson and the manufacturer... something to be aware of. When shopping for my fixtures, the Ferguson rep made the point that if you want your whites to match, go with all the same manufacturer (rather than mixing, say a Kohler toilet with a DXV sink). I did that and yet the whites are still not matching. I've had guests comment on my "two-toned toilet" -- not the look I was going for.

Which Drake is everyone referring to? The standard Drake using 1.6 gallons that is #1 selling toilet on Amazon Toto CST744SL #01 or the Drake II which is rimless and has the double cyclone technology, making it a closer match to the Carlyle II which has the Tornado technology and is rimless (and skirted). There is also a Eco Drake that is similar to the standard Drake but uses 1.28 gallons. We are considering the standard 1.6 gallon Drake for our secondary bathrooms because of its low price and yet excellent flushing. Saving water is not a priority for those bathrooms that don't get used a lot anyways. We are considering the Toto Ultramax II 1.28 - which is the same as the Carlyle II 1.28 but without the skirt. I like the idea of the skirt but it didn't appear that the Carlyle's skirt was as simple as needed to be easy to clean and thus not worth the extra $185. Also, as far as Toto colors, the cotton white is the bright white and Colonial white is the antique white.

The 775, it says the seat is sold separately, so you can choose the one you want for comfort, etc? this is a total guess…

I had not used the compare feature on Toto's website until you pointed it out, wsea. You are right about the trapway type. That is the only difference between the two toilets that is revealed there. The Drake has a semi-concealed trapway, and the Drake II has an exposed trapway. I admit that I don't know what that means.

Stephanie - both of the two models come without a seat. I guess you are right that that allows one to choose a seat to one's own liking.

We have 3 Toto Drake toilets. Not sure if all are the same or different at this point. I would NEVER buy another one. The flush is very weak & "skid" marks all the time, and I think ours are still the 1.6 gpf.

We have an American Standard 1.6 in one of our 5 bathrooms that is awesome! Will be replacing the Totos sooner rather than later!

I think it's also the ceramic finish from the Drakes of that era. We have a 1.6 GPF Drake circa 2014, and it hasn't aged well at all. But we have a newer 1.28 GPF Toto toilet with the Cefiontect glaze and--while it's obviously still relatively new--it doesn't seem to have the same issues, despite having an even lower water flow. (I will say that we have a Washlet on that toilet, so maybe that also helps?) The flush seems similar, though technically it is a different technology there too.

@artemis78 I have a Toto with the newer finish with a washlet and I do think the combination of the finish and the washlet really makes a difference as my toilet is essentially self cleaning.

The washlet does a pre-rinse of the bowl when you sit down and then does something else in terms of cleaning.

My toilet is also very low flow as I am in California and I have never had any clogging issues as one flush disposes of everything.

@Hisensis, our new one is a Toto Promenade, but it has the Tornado Flush and CEFIONTECT glaze, which the current Drakes also have. I don't love the aesthetics and sometimes wish we'd gone with Kohler for looks, but we stuck with Toto in part to be sure it worked well with the Washlet and in part because they still rate very highly. I'm lukewarm on our older Drake, though.

@Hisensis, well, yes that is true. But there is NO way to raise the water line! My husband has changed out the interior mechanisms in all of the tanks with (supposedly) a better version by Flushmaster, but it has not helped.
