Am I the only one who really dislikes their Toto toilet?
Comments (81)I bought a Toto Eco Flush CST784EF for our master bathroom and it is terrible. You need to have a toilet brush scrubber by you each time you use the bathroom because there is not enough water or pressure to clean the toilet. And, it was $600. The biggest waste of money I ever spent. Go with American Standard. Comments (12)OK pricklypearcactus, you're making me do alot of research now.... Here's the 3" flapper, model# THU175S, used on Toto "G-Max" 1.6gpf toilets, like the original, now-discontinued Drake: That flapper, from what I've been told, can be replaced by model# THU140S, which was used on their "Power Gravity" 1.6gpf toilets that were their midrange models - G-Max was their high-end. Note the lack of a hole on the side, which keeps it from falling until the water level is lower, thus sending more water to the bowl: But both of those 1.6gpf designs have been discontinued in favor of two 1.28gpf flush systems: E-Max (on most of the "Eco" models) and Double Cyclone (on most of the "II" models). Now here's where things get complicated - all of these seem to use a whole new range of flappers - a quick search turned up at least three new ones - THU253S, THU277S, and THU299S. Amongst the changes, most (all?) of these have added a float that sits above the flapper. I don't know if the float can be adjusted or removed - haven't seen one in person yet. There's a picture of the flapper from the Eco Drake, which I think uses the 277, on Terry's site: (here). To get an idea of the difference, look at the parts diagrams for the old 1.6 Drake and the new 1.28 Eco Drake. Now see the difference in part #6, the flapper? It does seem, as Terry noted, that the rest of the tank (and the bowl for that matter) haven't changed - compare the other part numbers. Maybe all you need to do to convert an Eco Drake into an old-style G-Max Drake is remove the float, or at least swap to the old flapper, although Terry says on his thread that the flush valve is different too. There was a 1.6gpf Double Cyclone in the lineup until recently (on the Neorest, Soiree, and Guinevere) - I can't find what flapper they used. Comments (16)Stephanie, Your question prompted me to share my recent and ongoing experiences with Toto toilets. The following story is a bit long...and they're not even installed yet! I just purchased three toto toilets, (two of the Aquia II - "regular" height, and one of the Aquia III = ADA), all with soft close seats. But I returned both of the Aquia II's and exchanged them for two of the Drakes with the Sanagloss finish - supposedly. I decided to return the Aquia II's after reading too many mixed reviews of them on another toilet forum, and after reading reviews (HERE) that were very strongly in favor of the Drake with Sanagloss finish. When I called my plumbing store to tell them I would be returning the Aquia IIs, I gave him the model number of the Drake I wanted = CST744SG-01. After unloading the Aquia's and loading the Drakes in my car I decided then - a little late - to check the model numbers, even though the label clearly said "Drake." The model # on these boxes was different (C744EG#01) than what I requested. And only one of the boxes' labels specified "Sanagloss." The manager said this different model number is the most current model # for the Drake. WHile I was still at the store I decided I didn't want a toilet that didn't specify "Sanagloss" even if it had the same model # as the Drake that had a label specifying a sanagloss finish. When I took the new Drake back home, I noticed that the Aquia's (tanks and bowls) were made in China. THe Drakes' tanks were made in Mexico and the bowls someplace else - maybe another Asian country, I can't remember exactly where now, but a third country at any rate. I can't help but wonder if there seems to be so much variation in the reviews of some of these toilets because different parts of them are made all over the world. When the manager called me to tell me that the next Drake with Sanagloss was ready for me to pick up I went to pick it up only to see again, that the outer model # label didn't specify sanagloss. This Drake's label was yet a third kind of label - rather a separate "SANAGLOSS" sticker was slapped on the box. But the manager opened the box to show me the "Sanagloss" seal on the bowl. What a fiasco! And they have yet to be installed, which I understand can be a bear of an issue for the Aquias, not so much for the Drakes. I decided to keep the commode with the ADA height and use it in the downstairs powder room. It also has dual flush and this combined with the ADA height makes it ideal in my mind for the downstairs powder room. We have some relatives who visit who appreciate the ADA height. Comments (22)The Age old question of what toilet is better! To be honest, it depends on the models. Some Kohler toilets will perform better than Toto toilets, vice versa. When it comes to overall performance, I have had much better luck with Kohler (Installed in rental units and my home) Toto makes an OK product, but I recently looked at different reports about toilets and found that Kohler has upgraded their flushing technology. All of their new Eco models are flushing at the top of the MAP test (Which is the only toilet performance test) This score indicates that the toilets are plug resistant. Also, I did some digging into what makes the products different, and found that Kohler glazes all of their trapways, even on entry level models, Toto does not. What this means is the internal parts of the toilet are smooth, like the external parts, it prevents plugging. Toto does not take the time to do this on all models. I also had a 1 piece Toto in my home that I switched to a 1 piece Kohler. For the last year, I kept noticing a line that ran accross the bottom of the tank, I found out that this was part of the molding process, and needs to be sanded down, it never was, now I see it on Toto toilets all the time. It was kind of dumb, but once my wife pointed this line out, I could never, "not see it" My new Kohler Cimarron does not have any molding lines or visible joints on it. So in looking at toilets, I would say go with Kohler, I have had great luck with the Cimarron line, both 2 piece and 1 piece models. We went with the Drake in Sedona Beige which isn't a darker beige and that's a relief. We wanted something light but more of a creamy light beige.
It's showing more white in my photos and that's inaccurate.
It's closer to the stock Toto photo ( last photo I'vd attached). Here it is in our bathroom, along with the standard online photo of the toilet . As you can see, the stock photo looks quite different than the toilet As it appears in my bathroom photo. I'm not sure why.
Our floor is actually new and clean and much lighter than pictured but it came out weird and splotchy in the photo.
It's frustrating but I can't get an accurate photo to represent the toilet as it appears in our bathroom. But for what it's worth, the Sedona is a better match with our wall and vanity top than a bright white toilet.
