how to design 2 adjoining bedrooms for privacy

2 bedrooms are separated by 1 door which means person in one of the bedrooms has to walkthrough the other bedroom to access bathroom snd other part of house.

I assume that there is no hallway for you to access from the far bedroom. The only solution is to create a hallway within the accessible bedroom. If the rooms have closets, you may have some flexibility to use them.

You might want to do a few calcs on how far back into the room the light will penetrate, in all the seasons. Typically with just a S facing window, there may be issues with getting enough light as the plants get further into the room, away from the window. Things like putting low plants right by the window and scaling in taller plants further back can help. And of course you mentioned adding grow lights. Also, depending on how many plants you were planning and the size of the room, humidity may become an issue. As might floor support if you were going to bring in a lot of dirt (most houses are not designed to hold a foot of dirt on the floor).

I would keep it as one room. I see no issue with 2 guests coordinating the bathroom usage. You say you get a more serviceable room with plan #2. I'd go with that. Here is a picture of my floor plan that is almost identical to your layout. Here is my floor plan via link to photobucket. The upper right is my small stacked W/D and next to that is a 17" wide tower for storage. The shower is in the alcove in the upper right corner. Budget permitting, of course, you could create the hallway as shown (CamiPeck); however, rather than taking up more of the space in that center bedroom by adding a closet within what's left of it, create another addition to the back of the home. This would enable you to open up the wall behind what is now the master bedroom closet and close off what is now the front of the master bedroom closet, using that closet for that center bedroom. You could then open up both closets on the wall of bedroom 2 for a double closet there. Create an "L" shaped addition to the back of the home that wraps all the way around the outside corner of what is now the master bath -- but not covering the window in bedroom 2 ... begin behind that window and have the new master bedroom outside wall (right side of your pic) extend down/back all the way to even with the outside/back wall of the master bathroom. You could then use the space between what was the master bedroom closet and the master bathroom as the new master bedroom closet. I think you could, but in our ceiling like that, we painted the 45 angles the same color as the vertical walls, and put the white only on the middle horizontal line of the room. It was shocking at how different the room felt. It was like someone finally got the combo just right. We had a light green walls, with only the white on the horizontal of the ceiling... The room felt so much larger! So you might consider that. In your case, if you want to do something different?? just put the blue on the horizontal line of the ceiling and put the white on the walls and 45 degree angle surfaces. Blue ceiling are soooo coool! And ....ne'er a spider will make a web there, really! It is crazy but true.

Stand in the BR farthest from the main house... where could you move the existing door? Possibly no wear. If not, could the door become a hallway thru the other BR?

Ah, an old farmhouse. This was either to save space or to prevent children, particularly teenaged girls from wandering at night.

It's really hard to answer without knowing the layout. Can you go through a closet?

I don't think this was an architectural form of a chastity belt 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

I think earlier cultures had different ideas of the need for completely personal space in a bedroom. People who were moving from one room shacks probably thought having a separate room was the height of luxury.

A lot of older homes have "non-private" sleeping areas such as shotgun homes. Many older tenement multifamily homes have "sleeping areas" that could only be accessed through another bedroom.

I don't know if it is technically a "legal" bedroom since my understanding is that a sleeping area requires a window for safety which is why basement bedrooms are often not legal sleep areas because there is no window large enough to escape from in the event of a fire.

However advertising such a room as a bedroom in terms of the count might be misleading in terms of people who want the standard separate bedrooms coming to view it and feeling it was a waste of time.

However depending on configuration it could be desirable to someone who sets it up as a nursery type sleeping area.
