Can you help me design my living room?

Hi everyone!

I recently bought a couple pieces of furniture and now I don’t know how it all comes together. Can you help me determine if I will have to sell some pieces, the rug or other stuff? First of all, I want to paint the room and then make the necessary changes of furniture. If paint can solve the problem then great! Also I need to figure out the layout (is the access from the corridor should be blocked, etc.)

I am supposed ot paint in white colors only and since the room is only 9 x 11 it might be a good idea. however however, i have a 65 inch tv and i was wondering if the wall behind shoudl be dark or not necessairly. i though of installing wall shelves too.

Lastly, I painted my corridor with mayonnaise (OC-85) which is too yellow to my taste but still look good for the said corridor (brings the sun to the nothern part of the apartment). The living room is full south.

It is possible that maybe everything is fine already and just need to decorate (shelves, etc.)

TL;DR : trying to figure out layout, paint and furniture.

I think the furniture is fine but the rug is not working for me. Too much contrast for a small room IMHO. Pick the paint color after you have finalized everything (furniture, rug, throw pillows, etc.)

Here are some options for more neutral-colored rugs (except for the first one which has a bit more color). All rugs are Crate and Barrel because I can't photoshop and at C&B, you can upload a picture on their site and it gives you a good visual for how a rug will look in the room you uploaded.

I like the second one the best. With the third one, you can bring in more colors with throw pillows and artwork.

Not loving the size of the rug...can you use it under the bed?

Consider jute in gray. I think it will work so much better with your cute ottoman.

Consider two black lumbar pillows. One for each cushion.

One more photo, please, standing at the t v and getting the shot of the front door and the position of the loveseat.

Thanks for the thought provoking questions and comments. The door between the kitchen and living room is open most of the time and there is a lot of traffic between the two rooms, so I think that I need to coordinate the color schemes. On second thought, it may be the boldness of the print in the kitchen which I dislike more than the colors. I prefer a softer look. The living room is painted paneling. I wonder how it would look to put up a chair rail in the living room and paint the wall below the chair rail a green, blue or taupe which matches the wallpaper in the kitchen but maybe in a lighter tint? A chair rail might look strange with the vaulted ceilings though. There would be one-third color on the bottom of the wall and two-thirds off-white on the top. Is the chair rail a good idea or do any of you have other suggestions? If I go with green, blue or taupe wall color beneath the chair rail and keep the off-white color above, what color sofa would look good with each color -- green would look good with sofa color? -- blue would look good with sofa color ? etc. When I look at the maple furniture against the off-white walls, I think that has a harsh look. I would like it to look softer, but am just not sure what color would accomplish that. You may be getting the idea by now that I'm color challenged -- LOL The current rug in the room is taupe and burgundy (it does look a bit gray in the picture). I do intend to replace the rug with a much larger rug -- probably 9 X 12. I like the maple furniture because it's what I grew up with. My mother and aunts have this type of furniture in their homes. But, a friend of mine recently suggested that the furniture is a little dated. So, I just wanted some other opinions about whether I should think about replacing this. I was looking for solutions to the fireplace and came across a web site called Brick Anew -- http://www.brick-anew.com/. Any opinions or experience with this product? I like the suggestion of covering over the brick, but it's probably not in my budget right now. Maybe Brick Anew would be a short-term solution and later I can box in the fireplace.

Hi Midwestmom: I'm not sure if there is enough room to accomplish this but could you; angle the recliner and love seat on either side of the fireplace. Place the large sofa angled facing the new location of the love seat from the corner of the opening of the kitchen and off of the wall with the secretary. I hope that makes sence. Put the sofa table behind the sofa with two lamps for lighting at either end. Now, move the secretary on the same wall but close to the stair railing. The siloettes would look nice grouped above the secretary vertically instead of horizontally and you could put one of your chairs next to it. The TV and bookshelves would be against the wall where the love seat is currently but moved over a bit where it could be best seen from the three angles where you have placed your seating. This all depends on if the sofa will indeed fit angled on that wall. If it will, you will have an open arrangement where you could pull chairs in from the kitchen for more seating. The fireplace wall would be your focal point and it will still function as a TV room without the TV being the first thing you see when you come in the door (like I am forced to do). Good luck. I love your home. I am also married to an electrician. He has all these ideas for our home but electrical is the last thing he wants to do after work or on weekends. . .LOL!

You're not going to need a dining table in here? As always - measure twice, buy once! Have an overall plan before you buy or do anything. Measure to find the center of the window between the bookshelves. Put all seating pieces on furniture coasters, so you can move them around. Put a seven foot couch (or use your single love seat here) five feet away from center of window, facing window. Make sure the couch has thin arm rests. Place an oval coffee table in front of it. (I prefer two small coffee tables instead of one big one so I can move them around, but that's me.) Perpendicular to couch, on either side, place two round swivel chairs. Allow enough room to walk around. Place small round side table next to each chair, on the couch side of chairs. Add wall decor and floor plants/sculpture, if desired. Place accessories on side tables and coffee table. Regarding the approximately 4 1/2' by 8' area left over in front of kitchen, there are a few things you can do with that: craft table, dining table, reading area, mini office. Furniture placement is not permanent. Use your own needs and artistic talent to move them around as desired.

Thank you, I think we could start by taking into account the constraints (doors etc), this is really the most difficult thing to place elements such as sideboard (if there is one), sofa, coffee table, kitchen island - or kitchen table - etc. I don't particularly want a TV corner, if you can fit one (or an ultra-short focal length projector) why not ? but it's not essential. I'm not against a room partition (between kitchen and living room), but taking care not to block the light and "break" the volume of the room. So, if anyone wants to try? A layout to propose, even roughly.... modules, furniture, elements... a continuity between the kitchen and the living room... all ideas are good to take, because we still haven't found the magic formula! thank you very much !

For me, a good question whether TV wall could light or bit darker, like the tv is. If you love indigo sapphire navy blues ok with tan leather.

But I like the patterned rug which brought zing in small room without much wall space for blue art. Up to you whether your blue could be used in small items of pillows, etc etc

@RTHawk @elcieg i agree that a neutral rug would probably be best and then @everdebz put some art and deco on the wall (or colored dark paint behind the tv).

I actually like the wood floor too but a rug makes the room comfy hehe!

The air conditioner...would it fit in the corner where the little table is now?

With a different rug (which visually determines an area) were gone, could the sofa be moved closer to the window? I know it is a matter of inches, but it can make a difference in the space you have walking into the roo,.

@elcieg yes of course the little will not stay there! The loveseat could be off-centered yes. Not sure if the TV off-centered looks as good (as long as there isnt anything of the wall i suppose). It would allow for an eventual chair to be added to the space, mayyyybe. i think i could go for a 5 x 8 rug instead of 8 x 10. the rug could fit in the dining room but the room is already darker (north, so less light) i might just sell it. (the rug is actually 8 x 11, my mistake when i bought it).

I forgot but i think lumbar pillow would be a good idea. Or a pillow tall enough so my arm doesnt hurt against the slim arms of the loveseat!

BMoore's Horizon Gray neutral? might have just enough contrast with sofa/ curtains... with blue rug can't tell.

In my home, I placed rectangular canvas photo over my tv. It might be nice to have art or photo in the room.

Possibly place one [of Koetsier's pieces] at each corner-upper of tv, and a rectangular object you really like, or another art piece over the tv.
