Paint Design Dilemma

I need help picking my exterior home hardie board colour.

last year

The front door will be coming out 8ft. There will be a peak over the front door with cedar beams. I wanted to add hardie board to the area where you see stucco for an update. The roof colour, the soffits and trim will remain as is (beige). The windows are black trimmed. Garage door is black. The brick is more browny than red. My front entry door will be black.

Please help with suggestions for colour-horizontal or vertical planks.

The portico looks undersized for the volume of the house and the entire new entry looks quite craftsman; not a compatible look for the style of the building. Not sure why you're adding a 4th color; three is about max I'd say. If you really like cedar, then this would be more in keeping with the style of your home, and you might consider Romabio to change the brick color.

I agree with Deco, cedar would look good. Taupe will work with red brick as well muted green, charcoal gray.

Janet, you have my sympathy as well. I would only add that you should pick colors that make you feel happy. I know the trend is toward neutrals, but if this is your long-term home, I would not worry about painting for resale, but to choose colors you really like and that flatter you. Look in your closets and see what colors are prevalent -- that is a good clue. Several years ago, I lost both my mom and dad just a few months apart, and shortly after the loss of a very dear friend. I was devastated as you might imagine. Fortunately for me, DH and I had just purchased a fixer-upper, and we had always agreed that we wanted to paint in colors we loved. We ended up painting in a warm palette of spring greens and warm, buttery yellows, and every time I stepped into the house after work, my spirits lifted. We just sold the home, and despite my agents suggestion that we "soften" the paint colors a bit, we did not. We had multiple offers after 5 days on the market it, so our color choices didn't even hurt us financially, and I am convinced that that they helped me through a very difficult time. Am I the only one who still loves the idea of that adorable house getting a pink update?! I feel like you should play off the playfulness of your home and update the storybook feel to it. I would either get a more modern pink for the body of the house with a blue/grey roof OR paint it a soft white with a pink door and crisp black shutters and charcoal roof. You have a Story Book Tudor! (look them up) That roofline is unique to this style. This one is beautiful Almost all of these tudors are white, or cream, with a darker trim. a lot of them had brick or stone work accenting. If you want to stay with the period of the house, they weren't blue or any pastel colors. Green was about the only other color used w/them, Here's a 1.7mil Storybook in Seattle! I love the darker trim colors, black windows. not crazy about the tan stucco color, especially w/the red brick. this would have looked better in a white or cream stucco. I'll post some of the Storybooks, and you decide what you like these last two pics have a darker color palette. I love this last one w/the dark windows, dark trim around the dark roof, and beautiful landscaping and metal accents.

I think you should be changing the beige panels to whatever color you use on the new section, and I agree with the assessment of the portico. Is there still time to rethink it? Because of the black windows I think charcoal would work best for a new color - like the color of your garage doors.

The brick is more browny than red. My plan is to do it in stages. Eventually I want to change my downspout and soffits to black. I was thinking charcoal grey to replace the beige stucco. I can still change the portico. I am not going for the modern look so I was not considering a flat roof.

Are you suggesting cedar look(colour) planks for the portico? Would you still change the stucco to a hardie board?

I used James Hardie Monterey Taupe in my home. It’s a neutral gray/green color that may work well with your brick and roof color.

These are the best I could do with the sun shining today. The last picture is from a cloudy day. My Hardie Board was factory finished and not painted on site. I think you are still able to SW and they know the color formula.

This is lovely. My plan is to change the colour of the roof and the soffits to black over time. I am doing this in stages. Thank you for sharing.

Many thanks for the responses. Decoenthusaste,Can you explain what you mean by "The portico looks undersized for the volume of the house and the entire new entry looks quite craftsman; not a compatible look for the style of the building." How would you increase the portico? I did not want a flat roof as it does not keep with the country feel of my home. Do you have a photo of what you had in mind? What do you mean by craftsman?

Oh, my goodness Deco! Thank you. We just called on a FSBO that looks like your example and Tonia’s — brilliant. (Tonia, you can’t make a bilevel “country”, it’s a mid-century genre’ that needs to be itself regardless of the setting.). I was just wondering whatever I would do with it. Wonderful eye. I saved every one of the 11 accompanying photos.
