DE spit back into pool

My filter was working fine. I backwashed and cleaned it thoroughly. Then, I added new DE through the skimmer, and it all ended up back in the pool. I opened up the filter after running the filter for a couple of days, and there is basically no DE on the filter grids.

Is replacing the filter grid the only possibility? (the grids are about $400 to $600) to replace. Would I be better off replacing the entire filter, given that my system is 15+ years old? (new filter with install would cost about $1,000).

I have the Sta-Rite system:3. One of the "edges" is completely split - not sure if that is torn, or is that the beginning/end of the filter material. (see attachment)

I'd really appreciate some advice/help? Thanks!

15 years is quite a run. I'd say you got your moneys worth.

If the filter itself is in good shape, no need to change it. I would change the grids. Check any o-rings or gaskets on the tank and replace as needed.

DE is coming through the grid via a tear in the grid.

I am happy to report back that I got everything working again. I reseated the filter a few times, and turned the backwash valve up/down a few times. And lo and behold the DE stopped getting spit back. My take is (i) the filter needs to be positioned a certain way (ii) the split seam is really an end-seam and the filter was not torn. Hope these updates will help someone else in the future. I have sparkling clean water now 😃

A lot (most!) of the DE has been sucked out by the pump but I do have quite-a-bit still at the bottom of the pool. Can the DE be vacuumed? Any other ideas to get the last of the DE out? Thanks!

I've used both and each works well. I can't tell much difference except that with ABS you need to use ABS to PVC glue. The pvc valve requires a screwdriver or nutdriver to remove the piston for lubing or replacement. ABS valve needs a wrench to remove the piston.

My son turned on the infloor cleaner and the filter pump when he was adding new DE to skimmer, after backwash. Now, the pool is cloudy, with DE, I assume. Did the DE get in pool water because he turned on infloor cleeaner pump while adding DE? If we run filter pump and infloor cleaner, will the DE eventually be cleaned out? Is it unsafe to swim in DE-clouded pool?

1) check the grids for holes in them. 2) check the manifold for cracks 3) check the o-ring on the return (unlikely if you are losing all DE) 4) check your multiport valve (if you have one) to make sure it's seated properly and you are not getting blowby. that's all I can think of off the top of my head. good luck. -- john

Hi Skeeter I wish I knew; it happened to my new pool a few weeks ago. We had the guys out mucking around w/ the heater then they dumped a bunch of water from some heavy rains. Next thing I knew, we had very cloudy water. At first I thought we'd run out of chlorine so I turned up the chlorinator. The next day I took off the solar cover and saw a ton of sediment on the bottom of the pool. I assume it was DE but don't know how/why it was there...
