no disposal?? here is undersink smaller scraping into type of receptacle for scraps..open door and lid lifts and finished in a second.....I'd get a small one of those and then a regular waste basket elsewhere or for the other side of sink cab. or the counter inserted receptacle for scraping as shown. once i learned that some of the traditional things one does are not really meant for the disposal I have been using the scrape method into a trash bin for certain items ...but the disposal does get used. You can get a smaller disposal...I'm not certain I would eliminate it totally.

Make sure you have filler space for the pullout spice rack. Looks like you might not be able to open it.

I don't like unsealed food in non-food areas--are you sure you want a toaster (which comes with crumbs) actually used in another room?

Dishwasher and stove probably won't be used simultaneously with this setup (unless you used a drawer dishwasher--disclaimer: I'm a fan, especially in tight spaces) but apparently most people don't use them at the same time. Just me. :) Consider swapping DW to other side of sink. I know other things work better with where it is now though.

I'd prefer an under-cabinet style hood here--the chimney style makes the neighboring cabinets look dinky and choppy.

Overall, classic, functional layout.

@Fori - There is definitely a filler piece there. We actually did investigate moving the DW to the other side of the sink, but that came with other issues that were much less appealing. Again, because of constraints out of my control, this is definitely the best layout.

I don't have an issue with using my mud porch as a pantry or microwaving and toasting in there. I'm pretty good with keeping areas clear of crumbs and messes.

That chimney hood is one of my favorite things about this new kitchen. I guess I'm going to have to hope it doesn't make my cabinets look dinky or choppy. At least to me - I'm old enough so that I don't particularly care what others might think about it. I'm happy to hear it's a generally decent layout.

@herbflavor - I probably should have included that we're not getting a disposal because I don't want one. Took me a bit to convince our contractor of that fact! But after going my entire life without, and having one in my last 2 kitchens (we put one in our remodel a decade ago, and one came with another house we bought since then) I'm totally over it. I was originally so excited to have a garbage disposal, but in the end I personally don't care for it and never use it. I know that I'm certainly in the minority on this, but my feelings are pretty set.

I tend to gather my trash and scraps in a receptacle on my counter while cooking and then either take it immediately outside to the garbage can, or put it all in the trash under the sink. It depends on what's involved - smelly stuff outside right then, other stuff can wait under the sink. I'm definitely giving thought to the best way to organize my under sink area with all of it's extra room (36" wide cabinet with no disposal - woo hoo.)

I'm curious if anyone has thoughts on what to store in base drawers?

We have a similar layout, except without the uppers--but then opposite the L, have another wall with drawers and uppers above that is probably a comparable amount of cabinet space.

- Is the corner dead space? I might reconsider that in a small kitchen if you can still make cabinetry changes (but it sounds like maybe not at this stage?) Our dishwasher is on the left, which I prefer because it keeps the stove side all cooking and the left of the sink is for clean dishes.

- Also if you can make any changes to the cabinets, I'd bump up the cabinets on the left side of the stove to 18" to get as close the the door trim as you can for the extra space. We did that eleventh hour on ours and so, so glad for the added space!

As far as what to keep where, I think it's very personal, but for us we keep silverware and towels/potholders/etc. in the drawers to the right of the stove, and dishes and pots in the drawers to the left (but our drawer bank there is wider). With uppers there I might put the dishes up above, but that's another reason I'd switch the dishwasher if possible--you won't be able to reach those cabinets to put things away when the dishwasher is open. We keep cooking utensils in the top drawer to the left of the stove. We keep less frequently used appliances in the corner cabinet, and have our trash in a pullout under the sink. No disposal here either, and have never missed it (but we also have municipal compost, which makes a big difference). Our glasses live in the uppers across the kitchen from the L, but for yours I'd put them in one of the cabinets above the dishwasher, or maybe the upper next to the refrigerator. We have shelves rather than cabinets next to our stove, but use one side for coffee/tea and the other side for cooking oils. A lot depends on how you use your space, though.

Thank you @artemis78. Funny you should mention that about bumping up the cabinets next to the range as I've been toying with that idea on my own. I'm honestly not sure exactly where we stand on the cabinet ordered, so I just sent off an email to ask. I'd want to increase both sides to 18" to keep the symmetry if I could. But I have the feeling that because of the mud room door location, I might not have that much room to play with. And the mud room door can't move because it effects the size of a room on the other side. We'll see...

And yes, sadly that is dead space in the corner. I could eliminate that situation by switching the DW to the other side, but I don't think it looks as aesthetically pleasing that way, plus I'd have to lose my 36" drawers. It would cost less money to do it that way, but it's really important that I like the look of the kitchen. I know myself and I know that I'll be fine as long as I have ample storage right next door in the mud room.

One of the things I've learned here on houzz is that I seem to empty my dishwasher a little differently than many people. I never take stuff out and put it immediately into a cabinet or drawer. The entire dishwasher is emptied onto the counter, I close the DW door, and then put everything away. I understand that might not be the most efficient way to do it, but it's how I roll.

FWIW, I also really worried about symmetry, but at the last minute we went function over form and went with asymmetrical, and I haven't given it a thought since then.

Another option might be to push the stove cabinets 3" towards the mudroom door and make that 15" cabinet into an 18" door to a corner cabinet. Then you could move the dishwasher to the left side of the sink but still have room for a 33" drawer bank on the right side. You would lose the symmetry but have more functional storage space, IMO. You could either do a 12" drawer bank between the d/w and refrigerator or push the fridge over a little and make that 15". All contingent on being able to change the cabinet sizes, though.
