SEa kelp supplements

Hi I'm about to put out Lesco 12-0-0 iron and nitrogen supplement and wanted to try adding sea kelp to it also, I've seen two kind, the Nature’s Lawn – Liquid Seaweed, and the 0-0-5 Sea-K Stress Reducer, have anyone had any experience with these or is there better options out there

I would advise not entering the kelp rabbit hole or you'll end up buying 50-pound bags and mixing your own. Worst case would be harvesting your own from the North Sea. Just get whatever is convenient in your location.

Have you done any tests on your soil? Do you know if it is in need of particular supplements?

Feed stores are the best place price wise. I've paid $45 dollars for 50lbs and applied it to the entire property. Once a year is optimal. Of course, I only did it once but I spray several times a year. I probably will try kelp meal before summer kicks in to see if they made any differences. Dchall- what did you mean by not using 45lbs of it in your lifetime? The recommended rate was 10lbs per 1000 sqft, at least I think???

I don't think the NPK is a big deal with kelp, it's the broad range of micronutrients it adds and it's stimulating effect on soil microbes that makes it almost worth that amount. A few bucks for ground up kelp seems fairer, though.

2 places I've seen either or both: Molzon Landscape Nursery 140 Middletown- Lincroft Road Lincroft, NJ 07738 732-741-9098 Dearborn Farms 2170 Route 35 (on southbound side) Holmdel Twp NJ 07733 732-264-0256 I bought only the liquid seaweed (Kelp) @ Dearborn for a foliar spray but have had to spray so much deer/rabbit/groundhog repellant on my dwindling flower plants haven't been able to use it much. Adding odiferous fish emulsion would attract even more critters including cats. Don't need them digging where others are already eating...LOL. I have seen the fish emulsion alone but you could buy both and mix or alternate them I suppose. Don't recall seeing combined product but might have missed it. I included phone numbers so you don't take a hike for nothing if they don't have it. One place I got a few plants and couple who run it are very nice and husband knows his plants. Grace (dregae): I wonder about liquid kelp so I check on that. ALL KELP HAS SALT, BE IT LIQUID OR GRANULAR FORM. Kelp4Less sells liquid kelp for $29 per gallon. Seaweed (a poster in organic rose forum, with 250+ roses in Southern CA) sent me a variety of Japanese seaweed to try in my soup .. all of them are salty, esp. Kelp. The NOW kelp tablets (100% dry kelp) for human consumption: I tasted it and it was extremely salty, I had to spit out. Even the dry Kelp (100% kelp) that Seaweed sent me, it made my ramen soup salty, I didn't have to add the seasoning packet. Some info. from below link, San Francisco Gate: " Sodium in Kelp At 186 milligrams of sodium per cup, raw kelp contains 12 percent of your daily sodium limit, even though it makes up less than 2 percent of the daily energy intake in a 2,000-calorie diet. Kelp is high in sodium compared to several other seaweeds, as well as other vegetables. For example, a cup of Irish moss contains just 54 milligrams of sodium, while an equivalent serving of nori boasts a low sodium content of 38 milligram. I always buy Organic carrot (Bunny Love), since it has less salt than regular carrots. My family hates regular carrots, except for soup, since it's so salty. So 2 Tablespoon of RAW FRESH kelp contains 23 mg of sodium, but once dried, it's more concentrated, and many times more sodium. I tested 2 fertilizer with kelp: Pennington Fish pellets with kelp, NPK 4-6-6. I made that into a soluble by soaking in a bucket of water in hot sun. Then I watered my roses, the health IS NOT AS GOOD AS alfalfa alone. The second fertilizer I tested with both kelp and seaweed is Dr. Earth FlowerGirl NPK 4-10-7. That was a disaster: salt-burn on my roses in hot sun. I would buy the kelp granules (people use it as salt-substitute) and taste it yourself first, before trying on roses. Kelp granules are dried kelp. When you give roses salt, you drive down potassium, and potassium is necessary for osmotic pressure & disease prevention. For that reason, KELP IS NOT HEALTHY FOR ROSES, SINCE IT CONTAINS SALT. Here's an excerpt on dry-kelp from below link: " Sea vegetables tend to be higher in sodium than land vegetables–after all, they grow in sea water! Nonetheless, fresh kelp is not high in sodium. Knowing the chemistry is nice, but in this case you're dealing with biological components. Seaweed is food for the beneficial microbes in the soil. That's a lot harder to quantify. I've looked into seaweed and never felt the need to use it. Ordinary organic fertilizer is a lot less expensive in my opinion. I have a friend in Phoenix who uses it in his organic program, and I don't see where his lawn excels above neighboring lawns. I'd say if you think you need to spend more money buying stuff, be absolutely sure you are watering deeply and infrequently, mowing properly, and fertilizing late May, early September, and late November before spending any money on frills.

As I recall there was a golf course in SoCal, Palm Desert area, that kept getting washed out by flash floods. They had some success using kelp in restoring their turf, but their soil conditions were much different from normal. They were basically growing grass in washed sand and gravel with no nutrients at all.

I use a lot of seaweed, mostly in my compost, and I'm a big fan, but I wouldn't pay for it. A huge benefit fresh seaweed supplies is moisture, which you do not get with the dried product. It takes up rainwater in its little "pillows" every time it rains, then releases it a few days later. In the areas I don't walk, I use it as a smelly, slippery mulch.
