Fish/Kelp Fertilizer

I live in Ocean County. Does anyone know where I can purchase fish/kelp fertilizer locally? If I order it on-line I pay almost as much for shipping as the fertilizer costs. Anywhere in Ocean, Monmouth, or Burlington counties would be good.

I bought only the liquid seaweed (Kelp) @ Dearborn for a foliar spray but have had to spray so much deer/rabbit/groundhog repellant on my dwindling flower plants haven't been able to use it much. Adding odiferous fish emulsion would attract even more critters including cats. Don't need them digging where others are already eating...LOL.

I have seen the fish emulsion alone but you could buy both and mix or alternate them I suppose. Don't recall seeing combined product but might have missed it.

I included phone numbers so you don't take a hike for nothing if they don't have it.

One place I got a few plants and couple who run it are very nice and husband knows his plants. They had some supplies but didn't see if they had fish/kelp fertilizer:

Good luck...know what you mean about the shipping costs getting out of hand. Never found NJ Greensand anywhere so had to get it online but waited for a "free shipping with some minimum purchase" when I ordered a bunch of things I knew I'd use in the next months or year.

One important step to do that will help prevent fertilizer burn is to water your roses at least 3 hrs but not more than 24 hrs before you apply fertilizer & than water your roses a second time immediately after applying the fertilizer. This is extremely important to do with inorganic chemical fertilizers because many of them have properties similar to salt & this is why they are the fertilizer most likely to cause chemical burn. Many of the fertilizers you talked about are organic & are less likely to burn but I would still do this double watering because they are very dry & you need to get them wet so the soil microbes can start breaking them down & realeasing their nutrients to your roses. One last thing, I suggest that you have a soil test done to see what you really need to add to your soil. For example, you are talking about using Epsom salts & this is commonly recommended by many rose growers for the Mg but I don't use it because my soils have adequate to high levels of Mg & maybe your soils have enough Mg also but you won't know until you test your soil.

Thanks so much for the advice. So it sounds like I should definitely not put them out this week, which is what I was thinking. Next week when the lows are in the mid 40s and sunny daytime temps in the mid and high 70s, do I put them out in the WOWs? I guess where I am confused is I thought with the WOWs you were supposed to be able to put plants out weeks before the last frost date. Is this just not the case? I read somewhere it is supposed to keep the temp inside the WOW about 10 degrees warmer. If I need to wait until night time temps are truly in the 50s, that will probably be in June. So in the meantime would I need to pot up the plants? Last year I definitely planted after the last frost... probably around the 1st of June, however I used no protection on them at all. Also, I received them at a later date so I was not responsible for keeping them alive until they went in the ground. ;) Great link Betsy, thank you. And thank you for the explanation on measuring soil temps. I have a probe thermometer... but 6'? My bed is only 1' deep. CharlieBoring, maybe next year I will try your suggested varieties. :) In regards to your comments: Temperature - Do the WOWs count as protection/covering them for the night? Sunlight - my raised beds are definitely on the low end of sunlight. I think they get 6 hours, but not more. I don't know how I messed that up when selecting the location however I miscalculated somehow. :/ I can't move them this year, however depending how this year goes for me I might try to move them next year. The 2 tomatoes I am putting in containers however I can move and I am looking around the yard for a place that gets more sun and that my husband will find suitable (he is a bit picky about it, which is the reason my beds are on the side of the house). My understanding about why organics are not effective in pots is that it has nothing to do with them "washing out." Organic fertilizers need to be broken down by microbes before they are in a form that can be used by plants. And in containers, populations of the necessary microbes can be much less stable than in the ground, for a variety of reasons. So.. substituting slow release versions of organic fertilizers really doesn't address the problem in any way.

I might try neptunes rose blend my friends. It does have the fish + kelp but in addition the yucca and molasses. I did not know anything about Yucca, just learning now. Yucca can help plants acquire resilience, mange stress better and access water from the soil better and many other things. Its the saponins which Yucca has in abundance and many commercial plant 'food' have saponins added these days. I have never heard of molasses being used as a plant food and now all of a sudden I see it everywhere. I have to spend some serious time educating myself about this. So the rose blend is definitely worth a try. Even if Yucca and molasses do nothing the fish and kelp are there. Forgive me if you know this already, I would be remiss if did not share this experience. I prepared alfalfa tea this season and used it on my roses, vegs and my other perennials. For me, in my garden, the results were phenomenal. I started a thread and many people wrote in alfalfa tea works specially well for them too. It does require you to make it (not hard at all) and give it to your plants a few times so there is a little effort involved. The current understanding is that the value of aa tea is not so much how much and what food it provides but that it probably contains a growth stimulant ( a good kind) called triacontanol. It might be worth checking out the thread. Its a very long thread and, as it often seems to happen, there is some quibbling. That bothered me. However the proof of aa tea is in what it does for your plants not if any theory can explain it. You know, my roses were just picking up steam and now the season is over. I have to wait till next year to try all these things.

I have purchased dry kelp meal at Forcellati's in Wall (just a little north of Circus Drive-in) and I know that they have fish emulsion too.

You might also try taking a look at the Neptune's Harvest site to see if the costs/shipping are too high. It is a very high quality product.
