mixing leather sofa with a fabric sofa

We have moved after 36 years in the same home and I am trying to use as much of my previous furniture as possible. We purchased an H&M sofa (Arrington) and a matching chair in dark brown leather (Piazza Mocha) in 2013. They were $$ then and are even more so now! We were advised that we should either get a sectional or an additional sofa to fit our current family room. Leather H&M Sectionals are out of the question $$$$ so we are leaning towards getting another sofa. Would it make sense to get the same Arrington sofa in fabric or would we be better off in a different style completely? Any advise greatly appreciated as this will be our last sofa and I don't want to mess it up:-)

Pics please and BTW 2 unmatched sofas in a the same space IMO look like you just took all your old stuff and put it in one room.

That is a very good decorating idea. It is very boring to see all leather as they are all solid colors so they don't do anything for each other and all leather can appear colder. Adding some fabric pieces allows colors and patterns and more warmth to the look. The only thing to watch out for with mixing fabrics, is that the whole look doesn't get too busy looking. Personally, I'd go with the same fabric (maybe one with a pattern and one solid, but the same fabric) for the chairs with leather. But that's just my opinion.

Are you asking for a style of chair, color, or for a type of upholstery that would work with your leather sofa set? As for style the most important thing to find is a chair with the right scale. Small chairs with large leather pieces don't generally work well. Color is so subjective and depends on your wall and rug colors. My personal preference is to use a patterned upholstery in darker colors with brown leather. One of my fav upholstery choices with leather is a heavy tapestry and there are many colors and patterns to choose from.

I would steer clear of gray upholstery unless you've always loved gray. It's been the trendy neutral and is on it's way out. If you haven't already, I'd google images and see if you can find anything that you really like. maria killam - what color sofa should you buy

In my head this would just look weird and I have no idea why you would mix leather , which lasts a really long time, with something that will wear out Just get a good leather sofa and add a couple of pillows for texture.

I think pictures would be necessary as advised.

However even without pictures I agree that two non-matching sofas isn't ordinarily what is done unless both sofas are deliberately chosen for a specific design effect. However ordinarily they would just look odd and random.

Also I question why you need an additional sofa for your seating needs. Most sofas only really seat two people comfortably because no one really wants to sit in the middle seat. You can use two occasional chairs and they would provide comfortable seating AND would look like it was more of a planned design since it is not unusual to have two matching occasional chairs, a sofa AND another "solo" chair that complements and ties together the other choices.

Absolutely, you can mix leather with fabric as long as it is the right fabric to hold its own with leather.

First thought is kilim. Either authentic like this one from Sundance catalog or you could find a sofa and have it upholstered COM (customer's own material) and do an Anatolian print.

Is this your sofa?

I like a Chesterfield style paired leather furniture. You could match the leather color, or choose a coordinate (you don't mention a rug, but maybe a new one might be in order?), but I would do it in velvet/

It will work and I like the fact that a new piece will not be the same as the leather sofa and chair. That's too matchy, matchy for me.
