Need ventilation in closet.

My master walk-in has no HVAC ventilation. It shares a wall with the master bath that has a wall vent on the shared wall. Can I just vent into that existing vent in the master bath?

I’ve actually never had ventilation in a closet before. Is this something they do in new homes or something? I’ve owned 3 houses built in the 70s and 80s and none have had a vent in the master closet or any closet.

Hi, Aaron,

I often see closets without any HVAC--particularly when the walls defining the closet are all interior walls. While those spaces may need little if any heating or cooling, they generally benefit from ventilation to help prevent mold and mildew. Tapping into the HVAC supply for Master Bathroom could affect comfort and relative humidity. I suggest installing a new supply tapping into the main supply trunk to supply air to the closet. Make sure the door bottom has sufficient open area to allow for return air flow. Another option is to install a small through-wall fan to ensure adequate air flow,

thought I'd add an update so no one follows my example as bragged up in earlier posts... Our pantry closet has been in use for over a year. We thought that a louvered door on the pantry closet would introduce sufficient air passage. We have a cold air return within the closet but also a heating duct running under the floor (which warms the air so closet is warmer than the adjacent room). We have operated a dehydrator or two within the closet pantry at times. We have also stored potatoes in the closet. This combination of circumstances and "features" is NOT recommended! The paint is now peeling on the ceiling. We have just installed a vent opening at the top of the back wall of the closet which will allow air to enter through the louvered door of the closet and exit at the ceiling on back of closet into the upper part of the basement stairway wall. It is our hope that we have now introduced an air current sufficient to allow the heat to exit the closet. Not sure how it's gonna work, but it can't hurt. THANKS, DH! We do not store foods in here, except beer, booze for parties, dogfood and jars of jelly and maple syrup. We're re=thinking the potatoes because of the warm temp and haven't yet made a decision. The beer may be a bad idea also because of the warm temp.

Judy - those cupcakes look yummy! I'm in your camp. The kitchen we are remodeling had a old vented hood. In the 7 years I have lived here, I think I turned it on maybe 2 or 3 times & that usually involved a toaster incident lol... I also cook plenty but like you, don't deep fry or sear/broil very often & use just small amounts of olive oil or butter when needed and not at high heat. I never had a problem with any grease build up or other gunk & I don't really find food smells offensive (well except when I was pregnant, but those days are over). This time around, I'm going with an OTR micro, b/c my counter space is limited & I hated that the big clunker was taking up so much of my precious counter space. (I'm now trying to figure out where I can hide my toaster oven for the same reason). I'm guessing I won't use the vent much this time around either - When we sell in 10-15 yrs - our kitchen will probably be getting to that "outdated" state anyway & will be redone again - the venting to outside is in place if they want to change back to a hood - but for me, this is just fine...

If this is a NYC remodel or new build you have to meet code. I think with a gas dryer you might be able to use a metal door with a certain square footage of louvered panel. I'm in NYC and my condo passed code 12 years ago, but I wonder how? Many, many things didn't meet code as the condo residents found out later. Good luck and would love to know what you decide.

Mcarroll16, it's very odd how the original posted. When I went to reply to any of the responses, I couldn't do so unless I logged into Houzz, although I was logged into gw. If the post hits a dead end, so be it. But I wanted it to have a fair shot. On the earlier post, I did ask mamgoose about moving the fridge to the hutch area. Removing that wall between the living room and kitchen is a load bearing wall and probably is a non-starter. As mentioned above, DIL is more interested in pretty than function, and son is going along, and is not kitchen obsessed like most of us here. I try to talk to them about venting and where the dishes are going, and providing a spot for paper towels, but I'm not getting anywhere. She had shown me the pix she had taken of the neighbor's house with the island, and I was not impressed. I saw lots of clutter on a 2 level island and very few uppers. But at least that kitchen had a 30” range. I won't post them here here, because they're not mine. DIL is talking about a 36” cooktop with an oven beneath which I dont think is a wise idea, and I tried to explain about the need for a hood larger than 36” which would reduce the available space for uppers, not to mention the inefficient routing for ductwork. I thought mamgoose's layout was quite good, but DIL wants a place to sit and preferred the island layout I'm trying to save son and DIL from themselves. This could be a costly mistake. P.S. I was able to post without logging into Houzz.

Thanks for the info, I do have some concern for mold and mildew, the temp swings are quite drastic in the closet. The closet has two outside walls (to the exterior of the house) so it does get quite warm in the summer and cold in the winter if we keep the door shut. The closet has a newly installed door with plenty of space for air flow under currently. I appreciate the insight - Seems like the through wall fan may be an option.

I guess it depends on location as well, in Florida the newer homes all have HVAC in the larger closets - one of my colleagues lived in an older home without ventilation - several of his shoes (and leather bags etc.) developed mold on them due to the heat and humidity. In Virginia now and don't see them as often, but with the walls on the exterior of the house the temp fluctuations are a concern for damaging clothing and other items.
