It's a basement, my guess Philly row house. Many of the basements in my neighborhood in Allentown had a similar set up. The older upstairs bathrooms in these one bathroom homes had tubs, so if someone wanted a second place to clean up, it was the basement, and a lot of them had showers added. There was a separate entrance, so great way for working person to come home, shower, and even leave dirty work clothes in laundry room!

And due to the placement of the upstairs plumbing, the perfect spot for the basement shower was just below the stairwell, right next to the basement drain and below the upper bathroom plumbing . . .

I would say no. I think the square rods send you off in another direction from your original vision. If lighting is truly the hardest thing to find in your town, have you considered looking online? Most lighting stores should be able to order just about anything from the lines they carry. There are SO any choices out there, even HD carries LOTS of lighting! When I renoed our first BR, I actually started with my faucet (Just cuz I got it at HD for a super deal), and then matched EVERYTHING to it! LOL I ordered nearly everything online (and 4 years ago from Canada, not so easy to do). My vanity handles (vanity was custom made to maximize storage- lots of drawers, and pullout shelf under sink) came from Germany, towel bars, paper holder, robe hooks from US, and shower from Great Britain! My light fixture was actually supposed to be a temporary fix (DH hates it), but the one I really wanted was just too expensive, this one came from a local Canadian Tire,(not sure what you have in US that is the equivalent to a Tire and auto store that carries just about everything 'cept groceries!) I looked at the finish, and lines of my faucet, and tried to echo that thin round rod in every other fixture. Probably no one else would notice, but I love it everytime I walk into the BR. DH hates the shades on this fixture...tried to find replacements, but lost interest after a while...once you're no longer in the midst of reno angst, some of the details become not so critical anymore...LOL

I understand that. The waterproofing from the curb to the tub would be installed prior to the tile. Orange is visible. If it is Kerdi membrane it can not be installed on the plywood. What waterproofing is on the tub deck?

Re: downstairs: these will be the children(s) and guest bathroom. Unfortunately they will have to shower upstairs should that be needed. If you ever go to sell, that will be a HUGE negative. I mean huge. Plus IMO it's rather rude to ask your guests to have to climb stairs to shower and then go back downstairs. And if I were your kid, I wouldn't be happy having to constantly run up and downstairs to shower. Re: full bath upstairs: It's an odd space and there's an existing bathroom there. True that likely we don't need a full bath there, but if we put it in downstairs, we lose the den space (or the kid(s)' playroom). And then I'm not sure what we'd put in place of removing the full bath upstairs. Better to lose the den/kid's space and have an actual usable bathroom downstairs. Most kids prefer their own rooms anyway. How about making the tub upstairs into extra storage space or even putting a stackable W/D in the space so YOU don't have to continually run up and downstairs for your laundry. - proposed Kitchen is ~8'x15' Considering counters are a minimum of 25.5" you don't have enough room to have cabinets on both sides as that would give you less than 4' of walking room. I would suggest before you do anything you post your kitchen in the kitchen forum.

Hi, Jen, my condolences on the loss of your grandmother. I think you’d get a lot more advice on the busier boards, such as Home Decorating and Design Dilemmas. I’d post this on those boards. I know I’m being petty, but why don’t they clean the floors!

I once didn’t post a picture here of my dining table, because I saw in the picture that there was a dried rice grain on the floor. One dumb grain! But to me, it looked like I dumped my whole trash can out.

I fully admit that’s not normal!

(To this day, I don’t know where that grain came from. We rarely eat rice.)

As far as the shower, I'm sure they are happy to have it somewhere and there's so much space around it that if it doesn't have shower-aiding stuff out of frame, it would be a cinch to add whatever you need.

It was a hard little grain. I saved it for DH to look at, too, then called the neighbors over. Everyone agreed.
