Updating dining room - color and rug to start

The dining room is the last room in the house that needs my attention. My style is a mix between transitional with some modern pieces. This dining room is a hand me down. I don't want to change the floors even though they are very cherry. I'm hoping to get some help on dining room paint color and style/color of rug for under the table. I'm thinking of getting the server painted but may buy a new one. The dining room table/chairs is too big of a purchase to replace right now. I'd like to keep the wall art , chandelier and sconces. But open to a different lamp style if that will brighten up the room.

The curtains - thinking of white sheer to go about the arch or switching to plantation shutters that I have throughout the house. Open for other suggestions.

The rest of the house is painted SW Crushed Ice, sort of an open concept home other than this long room. The other furniture in the house is the following: camel leather sofa in family room, ivory sofa in living room, orange, blues and greys as the accent colors. Blue/grey rugs in the other rooms.

So, I'd like the color in this room to be along those lines when making changes to the wall color. Please help. I'm stumped.

Choose rug first then paint. Lower the chandelier to30-33" above the table. Widen the curtain rod so the panels don't cover the window

Blue will bring out the red in the floors, so I advise you to stay away from it. Gray or green would be nice. I like the second one jck910 shows as long as it doesn't look blue in person. Also, you should be considering the color scheme of the other rooms nearby when you purchase a rug.

I like your house ,,, nicely done!! As far as paint color, in my opinion ,,, the blue in your kitchen is a "bright" color whereas the sage color is "muted". If you took that sage color and turned it into a light lime green (think granny smith apple), then the colors would pop together (look at the inspiration photo of the spider plant next to the blue paint). For that blue ,,, I would pair with (in the same tone and intensity) lime green, yellow, tangerine, or crisp white. It really depends on how much color you want. I can see a yellow or tangerine in your dining room with those teal chairs, but I also like lime green. I would not go with tan, I would do a crisp white before tan, if I wanted to go neutral. A "tan" that would work with that color blue, I think might clash with your hardwood floors. With the hardwood floors and the mix of woods in that space (which I really like, by the way) I would put white on the walls and bring in color with accents (pillows, rugs, pictures). Also, what's up with the red room in the background? Do you like that room? Is that color staying? I really like your fireplace. Have you ever considered painting the brick? If you do go with a bright color on the wall, you might want to consider painting it white and leaving the accents black. Good luck ,,, can't wait to see the after pictures!! :)

Thanks everyone. I actually can't believe I hadn't thought of using that rug in there before. bmallon - I wasn't sure if the sideboard was too fru-fru with the flowers and all. I have some ideas, so I run them by you all when I get the chance. I'm feeling pretty good about the chair pads too. It's funny, but with the old oriental rug, they seemed off to me - but with this one, they really do work! I'm thrilled.

I would go with neutral/natural rug . I like that your curtains are not skimpy. Wide curtain's rod makes room and window look wider.

As for painting sideboard, I would not. It is matching to dining set.

If you go lighter and wormer with paint, I think it would be better
