Where do you start? Living room/dining room paint

I've been looking through this forum for months now. And design inspiration blogs and magazines and paint stores and....I'm so lost.

My husband and I have been married for almost 4 years and everything we have has been given to us. We're so thankful to those people, but it's created a house that doesn't look like me. On top of that, I'm just plain bad at picking paint colors, decorating, arranging furniture, etc. BUT, I'm a stay at home mom to a 2 year old, 10 month old - and I'm 6 months pregnant with number 3. So, maybe it's nesting, maybe it's the coming spring, maybe it's the fact that I'm in our home all the time, but I feel like I HAVE to paint and make our house a cheerful, bright, clean-looking place to be.

I started with painting our kitchen, modeling it after this one: http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/kitchen-tours/kitchen-tour-ashley-anns-500-light-and-lovely-remodel-103180. I used the same paint color that she did. Love her kitchen and style. Looks cheerful, child friendly, bright, colorful...

Now that I've done that, our living room and dining room need to be painted. The dirtyish looking light sage green looks horrible next to the kitchen color. I think it should probably be a neutral...seems like a lot of space and tall ceilings for a color color?? All of the neutrals that I see in homes look like warm neutrals...tans and such. When I hold colors like that up next to the cool blue in the kitchen, it doesn't seem right. So, if you've read this far, that's my question. :-) What color can you see in my living room/dining room? It does not have to match anything that's currently in the room. We are pretty frugal and are trying to put any extra money we have towards paying off our house early. At some point we will buy new furniture, but it won't be for a while. But, I can get the little things - a new rug, pillows, curtains, etc. The bookcases will be moved into our library soon.

Without further ado:

The paint colors have been up there hiding behind two pictures for months. You can ignore them. ;)And the fireplace is in such an unhelpful place. Wish I could incorporate it more into the room, but I can't or don't know how.

New kitchen color. Obviously hadn't quite finished painting yet, but it looks pretty close to that.

Thanks so much for any help!
