Can I seal off half of a split chimney?

We have an odd double fireplace on our first floor. It's a 7-foot wall with a fireplace facing the living room on the south end, and a fireplace facing the kitchen side on the north end. The living room fireplace has a chimney that runs straight vertically, from the firebox to the roof. The kitchen side chimney curves south and merges with the living room chimney. The join is above the LR dampers, so the chimney is conduit between inside air and outside air.

Is there a safe way to seal off the kitchen chimney below the split, and keep using the LR fireplace? We would like the seal to be somewhere at the top of the firebox or inside the chimney--we don't want to brick in the kitchen firebox.
