Any way to save my azaleas or do I need to start over? (Zone 7a, VA)

So, azaleas are the main/foundation shrub in our front yard (we have a lot!). We have a south facing yard but large trees which make the ftont yard shady. About 4 years ago a row of pine trees which blocked the afternoon sun were cut down from neighbors yard. now, in the winter they get blasted with full day sun (no more afternoon sun blocking). Each spring since then they look worse and worse after the winter. They recover to some extent when the shade trees leaf out, but each year less so and this year is the worst of all. Is there anything i can do in the winter to protect them? i did read somewhere that azaleas can tolerate full sun with sufficient moisture but even during dry spells in the winter the soil still felt moist so I dont think that is the issue here, unless extra water might still help? I wonder if anyone has ever tried wilt stop on shrubs like this or would that be an inappropriate usage/ineffective? Many thanks in advance for any ideas!!
