I live in Zone 7a, and I have several that are reliably root-hardy here---Frosty Pink, Charles Grimaldi, a seed-grown white, and Becca Lynn (yellow). Versicolors are root-hardy in the sense that thee rootball does survive and they resprout come spring, but they don't see to perform well. This fall, I lifted several of my verscolors, just to see how that works.

I do have some cuttings I'm willing to send for postage, but I wouldn't touch PayPal with a ten-foot pole. (Just a pet peeve of mine.) If you'd like to e-mail me directly, I'll gladly give you instructions on what to do if you'd like some cuttings from me.

I would like to add to Judith's post that I wouldn't plant a brug in the ground unless it a few years old and you know it's got enough roots to make it come back. But again after a few years of cold in the ground they may not come back also. I planted 2 - 3 year old Frosty pinks in the ground and they didn't come back after the third year. You will also have to protect them with a layer of straw or something. We here in zone 7-8 will not leave them out any longer than a year or two. There are other ways of planting these in the ground for easy removal.

I live right at the edge of the Arbuckle Mountains, and most brugs are reliably hardy here. I'm way out in the country on top of a hill, so the wind blows hard up here and we have no buildings to block the wind, and no concrete to warm things up a bit. When I first started growing brugs in the ground, I would cut them back right before the first freeze, mulch well, then cover the stump with a garbage can lid or large pot filled with leaves, and mulch some more. The only brugs I had that didn't come back every year was Insignis Pink, and it was about 50/50. Finally I got lazy and quit going to so much trouble. Now I just cut them back and at least 2/3 of them come back with no added mulch. Brugs are pretty reliable in the ground here, and should be for you also. Dr. Seuss is my most hardy brug. I even had one in a pot on the porch that I left out last winter, and it came back from the roots. Gotta love it. :-)

ZoeGurl2001, it appears that you and Wolflover are in the same area and I would just make sure you have a cutting of what you stick in the ground if you would hate to loose it. It really depends on your environment and what you can afford to loose?
Wolflover, how old were the plants that you stuck into the ground?

My plants were all grown from small cuttings from the previous fall. I've stuck the rooted cuttings in the ground in the spring and go from there. They aren't old plants at all, just rooted cuttings. I do take cuttings each fall just in case I have some that don't come back. This will be the fourth winter in the ground for some of them. Tonight will be our first hard freeze and I cut all my brugs down today, and only saved two large plants to overwinter in a bucket of water. My greenhouse is bursting at the seams and I didn't have room to bring them all in, but I do have quite a few brugs in pots. Hopefully the plants in the ground will all come back from the roots. I'm sure if I will take the time to cover the stumps and mulch them well, they will all come back next spring. I might need to add that I have very sandy, well drained soil, so that might be a factor why the majority of mine come back with no added mulch. :-)
