Landscape Design Paint Exterior

Paint color & landscape help please!

Need design ideas! Looking for landscaping ideas and suggestions on what color to paint. Its’s a 1955 basic ranch with 8 inch smooth aluminum siding. Can’t afford to replace the siding so I will have to paint but I don’t know what color to go with.

Any input is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I would leave it white like it is. It looks pretty good. It can be washed also, if it looks a bit dingy. Put your money into hiring someone to draw up a landscaping plan, that you can do either all at once, or little by little. I cant tell by picture, but, is there a sidewalk to drive from the front door. If not, that should be first priority. I would also paint the front door a brighter color.

I think a medium toned olive would be nice. Too dark, and your roof and house will just blend in together. I would do an warm white trim, not stark white. A rusty red for the front door would really stand out against the olive. Or, consider a warm fall gold color. Be sure you paint the garage door the same color as the house, otherwise the white or off-white massive door will be the focal point. Gate the same as the house color, with the raised panels in the trim color. I would get rid of the overgrown bush to the left of the garage and put a nice planter there instead. I would also think about creating a curved bed that comes from the right side of the house and meanders down to the point where the little sidewalk turns to the front door - right at the point of the angle. That lawn space isn't really useful, but a pretty bed of low plantings and bushes that come up along the front of the house will take the eye to that area of the home, and bring it forward to balance the garage being so far to the front. It is a charming house, and your new colors will really make it feel even more welcoming.

You've got a great, lush-looking garden in an area that looks like it is pretty dry. I'd keep everything, unless something is blocking light in a window. Find a groundcover for the blocks between the sidewalk and street. I'd paint the house a color, not gray, which would be dreary. A slate blue would be so much more attractive than gray. And have a bright door. or navy I, personally, would go for a soft turquoise, but I figure that's not your style Have white trim. It will pop against a background that is not white or light gray.

The tans, beiges and browns are an unappealing color zone for me. Not only are they overdone (half out state!) they are the colors of waste and decay. But LIGHTER body color? I don't think that's a good idea if your scheme will include lighter trim, such as white. IMO the dark trims bring gloom in comparison to white trim which looks clean and cheerful. As a body color I'd lean to the medium grey/taupe tones. There are 1,000 as they can take on a cast of variety of colors, except yellow.. Search Google Images for "grey houses," "taupe houses" and you will see a lot of variation.

My first thought always is the lighting and IMO 400oK LEDs at least keep colors true. IMO the bottom color is the issue so I guess I need to know why that color is a must and why the chair rail at all in a space with a typical 8' ceiling it cuts the space so that the ceiling looks even lower .I would try cobvering the window and getting much better overall lighting before even trying to choose wall color. Classical White SW is yellow and even has some peach undertones so of course it looks yellow. I assume this is a bedroom so first choose your bedding IMO that always drives the color scheme in a bedroom I also think bedrooms need more than a center light to light the space so after you get finished cleaning the closet and choosing new bedding come back with pics of the bedroom and bedding and I am pretty sure you will get huge help here but IMO take away the chair rail they do not belong in bedrooms and then just patch the wall where the strip was and sand so it is the same smoothness as the rest of the walls. You need night tables with lamps and I always want drapes in a bedroom.

If the paint on the siding is in good shape, leave it. Paint the shutters and the door to bring a bit more color in. I would bring the grass out to the edge of the right door. If you sit out in your chairs often, consider putting some other paving in a patio area there, to delineate from the parking. If possible, put a few potted plants or a strip of garden between your sitting area and where you park.

Thank you all for your responses. The siding isn’t in great shape, so I think I will eventually have to replace it, but thanks to your responses, I’m going to wash it and invest in my landscaping.

cat_ky, there is a walkway but it is asphalt and will eventually be replaced since it looks so bad.

sigrid, I do use the chairs often. The driveway fits three cars…I want to narrow it to two and put in a small stone patio with a knee height wall to deliniate between the driveway and sitting area. I’m glad to have your input…it gives me encouragement that I’m on the right track!!
