If you are doing the much more expensive 36” range, you need the also much more expensive 42” hood, and the code required makeup air system. Your hood needs to be larger than your cooking appliance by 6”. And you need visual negative space around that hood if you’re doing a freestanding chimney hood.

If youre on a budget, stick with the lower power consumer grade 30” range and consumer grade 36” hood that doesn’t require a make up air system. Theres a huge price increase to go above that level. The costs more thsn double for the extra 6” difference.

In my mind, a hood that is meant to be freestanding should have enough space around it so that it is freestanding. If a hood is to be placed between cabinets, it should be built to be between cabinets.

On another note, the cabinet above the refrigerator looks like someone ordered the wrong size.

I would check with the hood manufacturer to see what their recommendation is for clearance, sizing and any other particulars.

Please no staggered cabinets and I think a bit of space on either side of the hood if possible is a good idea . Usually hoods can be installed right next to cabinets with no issues I do it often in smaller spaces where every inch of storage is a must, I sure hope those base cabinets are drawers

I do not know about building code but every range manufacturer strongly suggests that the hood by 3" wider to each side than the range hood.

The extra-large hood thing is a recommendation. That's all.

It is a good recommendation, though. I also think your hood as sketched would look better with more bulk to it, and that is another reason to enlarge it (but that probably doesn't represent the exact hood you're getting).

Cooking vapors rise in a V shaped configuration. To adequately capture them requires a hood that is both wider and deeper than the cooking surface. Or, they escape, and nastify your brand new kitchen.

The Building Code reference was to the makeup air that may be required for your hood exhaust. A hood exhaust above 400 cfms (in some locales might be 300 cfms) could risk the exhaust pulling carbon monoxide through the house when it exhausts the air over your cooktop. That is why makeup air has become a Building Code requirement.

The hood needs to be 6" wider than your cooktop, i.e. 42" wide. The "dissimilar materials" issue you mentioned is irrelevant. Millions of hoods everywhere that are next to wood or painted cabinets.

As @Patricia Colwell Consulting mentioned, ixnay on the uneven cabinet heights. Make them all the same height. With your 10' ceiling, I'd go no shorter than 42" tall upper cabinets, instead of the 36" cabinets you show. The 42" cabinets will both add more storage space, and make the gap to your 10' ceiling not appear so yawning. Then choose the height for the cabinet over the refrigerator to match the height of the other cabinets.

Is that fridge next to a wall? If so, make sure there is enough filler that the fridge door can open all the way.

I would highly suggest you post your kitchen design before you order any cabinets, etc because what I see already looks like it needs help.
