Problems ordering tulips and daffodils
I saw that a few sellers are already open for bulb orders for this fall. Let me just say that every day is a struggle looking outside and then thinking how easy it would be to order just a few more. In my opinion it's the worst possible thing to be able to buy them now instead of having a few weeks to cool down and then put together a bulb list while roses or marigolds or whatever else are flowering and NOT impulsively do it now while I'm all hot for more peach and purple tulips and maybe a few parrots thrown in.
It's like the bulb companies know how weak I am...

last yearEvery year I tell myself I will not buy more tulips and instead will plant more alliums and daffodils. Every year I buy more tulips... and alliums and daffodils.
That is a beautiful mix of colors in your pic! I try to buy Darwin hybrids because they come back every year, but the color palette is more limited.
They have just begun to bloom in my garden, it should hit peak bloom this weekend!

last yearI'm usually pretty good about restraining myself, but it's usually because I've spent money on annuals for pots and other impulse spring perennial buys. Then when the bulb catalogs come in I don't have much to spend.
Honestly, I hate planting bulbs. I don't know why but I do. But I do love the flowers and every spring wish I had planted more. But for some reason I always seem to be surprised by how early the bulb companies start pushing sales, and like I said by now the wallet is empty.
Your tulips are beautiful. I only put tulips in pots now, and treat them as annuals. They just don't seem to come back reliably for me - at least the blooms. I often get a bunch of tulip foliage and no blooms, so in the pots they go. I only had about 2-4 pots this year, but they've been beautiful and seemingly much longer-lasting than usual!

Best Nurseries for Daffodils/Hyacinths/Tulips
Comments (9)I agree with everyone I've started moving toward Colorblends over Van Engelen when possible. Last fall I ordered the same amaryllis from both and some of the same tulips. Colorblends gave me bigger bulbs and more dramatic blooms. I wish CB would list the variety names in their blends but I have not once been disappointed. I ordered alliums from Netherland Bulb co. and was literally stunned with the size, and quality of their bulbs. They are up and budding now. I can't say the same about VE's alliums in the past. Comments (4)Hi wynswrld98, I certainly do not agree with what was said and I have never had frost heave on any bulbs. I have however had frost heave on numerous things (irises, small perennials, etc) planted too late in the season to get their roots established, thus anchored in the ground. The main reason why tulips do not reliably return and bloom the second season, is that they are not actually perennial tulips. There is a big difference in tulips and the Darwin Hybrids have been bred to be much more perennial, and thus will return for successive seasons. There could be numerous reasons why your daffs no longer bloom, but my guess is that they have multiplied, and the bulbs have grown smaller, because of dividing, and they just need dug and replanted with the proper spacing. Daffodils planted a little deeper than the suggested depth, will not multiple as quickly as those planted at the suggested depth. Likewise, daffodil bulbs planted more shallowly than suggested, will multiply in number more quickly than if they were planted at the suggested depth. If I were to plant daffs or tulips 12" deep here in my clay soil, chances are that they would never be able to have the strength to emerge and see the light of day, much less have enough energy to put forth a bloom. Comments (2)Zuzu, CHECK OUT Colerblends Bulbs. They are great and they tell which are the best for cutting. They also have made collections of bulbs that bloom together. I Am very pleased with the quality of their bulbs. Especially take a look at their French Rose blend of tulips . I grew them last year and ordered 500 more for this year. Comments (18)Had to respond to this. My bulbs just arrived from Holland today-earlier than usual. Being married to a Dutch DH, of course we grow bulbs: mostly tulips-lily, fringed, Rembrandt, Darwin, doubles, the new giant, etc. I think my favorite is the plain ol' Darwin. We plant 300+ fancy and Darwins in the "Welcome Garden" every year in clumps of 10. They come in packs of 10 directly fron Holland. Every year, we order them at the Tulip Festival in Orange City, IA. Yes, the fancy ones, in fact most tulips are annuals now. I would like to find some of the old fashioned perennials, I suppose they may be species tulips. Has anyone found good species or pernnial bulbs anyplace? We grew 'King Alfred' daffys, but quit planting them, cuz we always miss their bloom, since we snowbird. We had a lot of clumps, but I don't even know if they still bloom. I lined the front beds with grape hyacinths (Muscari). I had to replace a bunch every year and finally decided they just don't do well enough here. My border always had holes in it, so I just let them die out. Alliums are a different story and if I get the right cultivar they are wonderful and winter hardy.I love doing paperwhites & amaryllis in the winter and seeing the little scilla early in the spring.
