Adding wood burning stove to aluminum 3 seasons room

I just purchased a ranch home and there is a really nice 14X16 3 seasons room attached to the kitchen going into the backyard. I want to convert it into a 4 seasons room to incorporate it into the rest of the house but it isn’t well-insulated so I need a heat source. I really like the idea of a wood-burning stove but I’m not sure if that’s possible with the walls and roof being aluminum. Can someone tell me if this is an option?

Interesting post on the logistic of adding a small wood burning stove to a 3 season porch. We have a lot of dead and downed wood on our property and we have campfires outside of the porch but I would really LOVE a small wood burner inside the porch to add more time to campfire season, and also more weather options. We hope to turn it into a 4 season room due to wanting to spend time there all year round due to the views and lovely light. I have the perfect spot for a small wood burning stove, but the logistics are up in the air. My screened in porch is very much like yours. There's not only the issue of the walls (which I think could be covered around the stove area with fireproof radiating tiles) but also the issue of the floor support. In our case it is just a wood porch floor, so I'm wondering if it needs a cement base or some type of shoring up of the support of the floor under the stove area . . .

The room had ugly tile carpet glued to the concrete that I scraped out. Now it’s just a concrete slab that we can’t really utilize. It’s my top priority as far as remodeling but I don’t want to make any aesthetic decisions until I decide on a heat source.

Hi All: My wife and I just became home owners of a nice 1920 3Br colonial 1450 Sq.ft. that has oil heat we want to put in a stove but are undecided on what type of fuel it will run on. Wood Pellet or coal. We live in Westchester county NY which is about 50 Min outside of NYC. Last winter we had 0 and low teen days. The house is not insulated and has 30 windows the with added single pane storm windows. We have looked at the Hearthstone Mansfield which is cast iron and soapstone (Would really love a Tulikivi masonry stove but way to costly all around install). Other stoves we looked at were the Harman TLC 2000 which can run on coal or wood. I have friends who heat with wood and pellet and I get mixed views some have had both, but all agree there is nothing like a real wood fire. But reality sets in I want to use the stove to heat my house. Any help out there would be great.

As far as how much the stoves can go down in the "off-season" depends on many factors. If there is a discontinued model, it will go cheaper. On others, it just depends on how motivated the dealer is or maybe there is a stove in a particular color that they want to clear out. Mostly, the off-season is best for scheduling the installation and ordering any parts. That's probably where you will save the most money. Maybe they can even throw in installation for free if they don't discount the stove. There is more bargaining room on everything when they have more time. As far as the motor and boards on the Harman, I only ever replaced one board, but I am convinced the owner of the stove messed it up (there were other issues with this guy). I never replaced a motor or even a blower, even on my own stove. There is fan noise with all pellet stoves and I would always recommend to people that it not be put in the TV room. It seems to bother some people more than others. If you are sensitive to sounds it will bother you. It is kind of like a range hood fan on low all the time.

On line you can check out the cost of various fuels per million btu. Cut wood is one of the least expensive ways to heat a home. Growing up we never paid for wood, always sought out free junk wood and I just cleaned the chimney a few times a season. Now that I have a child with asthma and a home that is only served by electricity I have had to rely on heat pumps and a pellet stove. (Puffs of smoke from wood stove when opening the door to feed wood are a problem for asthma.) Cold days when the heat pumps start cutting in electric resistance heat we run the pellet stove. It was the largest I could find (E----o Maxx) and holds three bags of pellets. The fan is LOUD - similar to a window AC unit on high (moved the TV to another room). Having used a wood stove for many year (before child) I can give first hand benefits of a large pellet stove. 1. No smoke or dust in the house. 2. We leave it unattended all of the time, it can even be wired to a thermostat. 3. Simple operation - don't have to adjust or babysit the fire. 4. This year I bought 2 tons of pellets for about $360 stored in the garage. I am fine with spending the money for the convenience.

Our Regency F1100 stove (www.regency-fire.com) cost about $2200 complete with installation. My advice is to let a pro do the installation as the homeowner's insurance company prefers that. I have seen far too many house fires resulting from a DIY installation. Besides, the job can be completed from start to finish in under a couple hours when done by a pro. The size of the stove is omportant too. If you're just gonna heat the small area, go for a small stove. I have the smallest Regency and I use it to heat my 1300 sq ft home. I have it in the living room and it heats the parts of the house I wanna heat. But the bedrooms stay cool. Mt stove has heat shields so the clearances are much tighter to the drywall . It's in the corner of the room and the stove is 6 inches from the wall. It has a ceramic ("glass") door and I like to view the fire in the evening. As a matter of fact, the fire is more entertaining than most of what's on TV! So go to your stove shop, or a couple of stove shops, and tell them what you want to do. Have a stove sized to your needs and location. (It gets colder here in VT than it does in VA for instance.) Be prepared for the work involved in a wood appliance. (Buying, stacking, splitting, carrying in the wood, etc.) But the fact you can turn down that OPEC addiction is well worth it!

I haven't done this, so I don't have first hand experience, but I have overseen the installation of a woodstove in another circumstance. The concrete floor is half the battle. And as I said, I think in general that a hearth and heat resistant tiles will be installed around the stove and where the chimney goes into the roof. I suppose you could also install an exterior chimney but that would be awkward.

I suggest you find a purveyor of woodstoves as close to local as you can find. They will be able to advise you on what needs to happen to meet safety and local building codes.
