Kordes Lavender Veranda, second year

My lavender veranda is looking so lovely! I planted it early last spring, and this season it has a lot more silver tone to it

Yours has the perfect lavender color and the foliage is very healthy. I got Kordes Summer Sun this spring from Roses Unlimited, perfect foliage but the bi-pink color is too gaudy. Summer Sun's scent is strong & pleasant (similar to Louis Estes).

I adore my Lavender Veranda. I almost lost it to neglect but got it in the new planting bed and it hsd been super healthy and full of blooms.

Ang, I bet you will be really happy with this one. It already had spectacular color

Altorama Ray, I'm still here just waiting for spring, lol. I lost quite a few roses over this winter so I'm evaluating what to do next. I'll definitely be downsizing my garden though, it's getting to be a bit too much work and the roses struggle for lack of sun. Most of my Austins did well but I lost quite a few of the Kordes roses. Madame Anisette is really tough and Summer Romance came through great as did Earth Angel but most are struggling. I even had a lot of damage to my laurel, rhodi's and holly this year. I'm starting to plant more hydrangeas since they seem to like my particular gardening environment much better, especially the panicles. Not quite roses though :-( I hope you fared better in your end of the state. Your roses are breathtaking. Sharon

As it turned out, I saw some Violet’s Pride in bloom yesterday at a local nursery and was sorely tempted. However, I decided to stick to my original plan, so I’m paying for shipping. I was impressed by VP, though — much more lilac/lavender than in photos, and definite fragrance — citrusy, I thought. Hmm, maybe I’ll expand that bed and stick two VPs in there next to the Love Songs? I’m going to plant LS in the ground, by the way. I’m rethinking pots since I SP’d Ebb Tide and moved Winter Sun and Unbridled off the porch yesterday to their (soon) forever holes... created by digging up the former owners’ asparagus ferns, btw... and thought, hmm, sure looks a lot neater out here without those pots. I’ve got my eye on another area where potted roses might thrive and not be as much in the way. Thanks again, everyone!

Cyndita: I had good experience with DA bareroots before, and the price is definitely much better. For the cost of one from Heirloom I can get two from DA. Sheila: yes my plan is to plant the DA in morning sun but I am concerned if afternoon sun is enough for Kordes roses. They haven’t bloomed as much as Olivia in my current dappled light environment Diane: Thank you for the warning about Brother Cadfael. I am also thinking of getting Sharifa Asma. The height might work better with the Olivia I already have. Hopefully it blooms as much as Olivia too. our_md_garden: thanks you for sharing your experience with Savannah and DA. I am actually also considering St Swithun since I generally like larger blooms, but I read here that it takes a while to establish and also doesn’t bloom as often as other DA. I am in NY zone 7. It rained a lot here in late spring early summer around the first flush, then hot and humid in July/Aug. I hope the DA roses won’t shatter and ball easily.

Thank you Rosecanadian and Flowers and all. I lost that Alchymist plant to cold! At least I think that's what did it. Maybe it was voles. It's supposed to be very hardy...Botanica's Roses rates it as hardy in zone 3. Kitty, Alchymist has a lot of different looks to it but often has a lot stronger coloring and can have some orange. Since it's a Kordes rose I'll add a picture or two. It is a very thorny rose with fat , beefy canes that can look ugly on the lower part. It would be good to grow something else to cover that . Blooms are large but have no fragrance.

@Kristine LeGault 8a pnw I am so glad your revived yours, because WOW!!! It doesn't even look real! My husband doesn't really have opinions of my roses, but there are two in my garden that he really loves-- this veranda and The Poet's Wife.

I'm crossing my fingers that David Austin decides to breed a purple now that the next generation is taking over things. I just love them.

I have two Lavender Verandas, in their second year. This one went into the ground last fall.

The other gets much more sun, is very healthy, but no blooms yet, Wonder why.

I think it’s a great addition to the lilac/lavender range.

Ang, what an exquisite rose--looks like porcelain. I, too, would like to see an Austin Lavender. The lavender rose I really want now is already out there, just not in the US, and that's Tantau's Lavender Ice. Don't these people want to make some big US money? I'm so tired of waiting.
