Comments (2)Maybe a pine grosbeak? They're pretty tame and could be found in your location. My sil bought me a Sibley Field Guide for my birthday, very easy to find birds in it compared to some of the other bird books. Haven't seen that one on this side, but we're only putting out niger seed for finches and chickadees. A neighborhood agreement - rodent issues! Also English sparrow issues, the sparrows were claiming all the bird boxes and running off the swallows when they showed up so we're trying hard not to encourage the sparrows. Comments (35)I have nightmares about birds. ha ha. When the kids were young they wanted a talking bird so bad. After wearing our resistance down we purchased a Cherry Headed Conure. We were assured this bird would talk and have a very large vocabulary if someome worked with him. So...off we went with this beautiful bird. Unfortunately, he fell in love with me and was rather agressive towards others. When the kids brought over friends if the bird was out of the cage the bird would jump at them and bite on to their noses. It was rather scary. I would not let anyone hold him anymore as I was worried he might go for their eyes. His cage was up in our living room. Often times the kids would be downstairs and when I finished making supper my son would have his headphones on. So I would yell downstairs fairly loud...Dusteeeennnn. Well, that intelligent little bird learned that whenever I yelled at the top of my lungs for Dusten someone would come running up the stairs. Before long, that bird would TRIPLE my volume and yell in a voice eerily similar to mine DUUUUSSSTTTEEENNN. When my son would come up the stairs the bird would literally laugh in this evil sounding cackle..ehhh eh eh eh. OMG This went on day and night. I could cover his cage and he would keep YELLING DUSTEEENNNN and then cackle his evil sounding laugh. We could not take it anymore, our house became so stressful that we had to get rid of the bird. I often wonder if the person who took him has the same problems ha ha ha. But I was too scared to call them for fear they would bring that dawg gone bird back. ha ha ~Tj~...See MoreSap from an insect? What could this be? No pic

Comments (18)Jane, if you only have one feeder out, you might try a good mixture with black oil sunflower seeds stirred into it. Don't get the cheapie kind with those little reddish-brown "BB's" in it. I have never seen ANYTHING actually eat those. I get mine at PetSmart, and I really love the Stokes mixture that has no hulls in it. I feed it, black oiler sunflowers and safflower seed. Safflower seed goes into a feeder that doesn't have squirrel protection, because they don't really like it, but cardinals and titmice do. HOWEVER, no matter what you are feeding, there will be times when birds are not around for various reasons. I have hardly any right now, mostly due to a pair of hawks hanging about our neighborhood. And even without the hawks, birds often disappear for a few weeks now and then. One more thing...don't forget that WATER is probably even more important than seed in luring birds to your yard. You'll notice that most of Maureen's pictures feature her great birdbath. Be sure to provide several "baths" around the yard. They can be anything from decorative features to trashcan lids on the ground with 2" of water in them. I often turn clay pots upside down and put a clay saucer on top for water. Keep the water CLEAN and shallow, maybe even adding a rock in the center for birds to stand on. Good luck! Marcia...See MoreRelated Professionals
