I'm so jealous!
We just don't get many smaller birds here and to tell you the truth, it hurts my heart.
Oh sure...besides the woodpeckers, we get grackles and an occasional goldfinch or two...but not much else.
I'd KILL for Bluebirds!
When I lived up north before, they were everywhere!!!
They're my absolute favorite sweet critter.

About a month ago, I put up my WBU set-up, but so far have only had MoDos visit.

Keep posting your pics please...I enjoy them immensely.

Guess I'll jes hafta be content with my herons, owls and other shorebirds...*heavy sigh!

Me too Lellie, I never get the blue birds or finches like Maureen. I'd love to see a blue bird. I do get cardinals, so I have to be happy with them and the fiesty mocking birds.
But please keep on posting the pictures Maureen, as we love to see them in your garden.

Wow, that's impressive. I get what I thought were a lot, but not that many, and no bluebirds for me. I did find an interesting feeder which mounts on my front window, so you can get a great view of them. They seem to have taken quickly to that feeder as it emptied quickly. What is the guy in the last photo? It looks like one I would get around 6 or 8 show up at a time. Thanks for the pics!

Maureen, your birdie photos are so wonderful! It makes me happy to know that YOU are enjoying these garden visitors, even if my feeders are pretty much being ignored right now.

Gary, the bottom piccie looks like a chipping sparrow to me, one of our native sparrows. (Unlike house sparrows which are European invasives.)

Tony, do any of these guys look like your mystery tenders? I see goldfinches, chipping sparrows, myrtle warblers (yellowrumped warblers), a Carolina wren, and what appears to be a house finch.

And finally, Katkin & Lellie, down here, bluebirds are mainly birds of the open pasturelands. I think the reason Maureen is lucky enough to have them is that her yard is in the open countryside. I have never known anyone in a Florida suburb to have them, though I suppose it is possible. But they seem to prefer our grassy pastures down here.

Marcia (I have had one pair of cardinals, 2 or 3 mourning doves, and one ground dove at my feeder over a period of about 6 weeks. Other than that, it's just squirrels. The hawks are back, and the birds are hiding.)

That last photo is a great example of how they camoflague (SP?). It took me a minute or so to find the two - I had to lean back from my monitor to see them. Cuties! Love those Bluebirds!

Maureen, you always have the most interesting feathered friends! I have the same pair of cardinals coming to my feeders daily for the past few years now. The have gotten so used to us. The other day the feeder was empty and Dennis said my birds were calling me. Sure enough, I took some feed out and they moved to a neighboring shrub. I filled the feeder and water and ZOOM they were right back no sooner than the screen door closed.

Yesterday I also saw flocks of Robins at the entrance to our community. They haven't made their way down the street yet, but they are back!

Great bird shots I have birds but I never get tired of seeing how they live in other peoples yards! Thanks for sharing!

Maureen: Beautiful photos. What is your camera? I have a digital, but it doesn't take good closeups. I have so much bird activity in our backyard (and bluebirds in the 'berbs') but cannot seem to achieve the quality closeup photos that you have uploaded.
A couple of years ago I put up a new feeder - one with a very large metal "roof" and more of a screen for the large seed. The moment I put it up on our four-feeder post, one cardinal arrived and called out to the others. Before long, there were at least a dozen male 'redbirds' in the adjacent small tree, on top of the feeder, and none were actually using it - just checking out their new stuff.
I went around the house and 'snuck up' on them to get a photo, but couldn't get close enough without scaring them away, to get a clear picture. All you can see in the photo is red against the green. Oh well. Maybe I should just get a new camera. Our lot is small but we've made it into a nature sanctuary where if you look out our windows you have no idea that you even have neighbors so close by except for the birds, squirrels and native plants.

Wow! What do you put in your feeder?? We had lots of blue jays outside for a time so I filled the feeder with black sunflower seeds but not a single bird has come to the feeder to check it out! What am I doing wrong?
We've had lots of blue birds in the bird bath also; is there a good feed mix that I can use to attract everyone?

Jane, if you only have one feeder out, you might try a good mixture with black oil sunflower seeds stirred into it. Don't get the cheapie kind with those little reddish-brown "BB's" in it. I have never seen ANYTHING actually eat those. I get mine at PetSmart, and I really love the Stokes mixture that has no hulls in it. I feed it, black oiler sunflowers and safflower seed. Safflower seed goes into a feeder that doesn't have squirrel protection, because they don't really like it, but cardinals and titmice do.

HOWEVER, no matter what you are feeding, there will be times when birds are not around for various reasons. I have hardly any right now, mostly due to a pair of hawks hanging about our neighborhood. And even without the hawks, birds often disappear for a few weeks now and then.

One more thing...don't forget that WATER is probably even more important than seed in luring birds to your yard. You'll notice that most of Maureen's pictures feature her great birdbath. Be sure to provide several "baths" around the yard. They can be anything from decorative features to trashcan lids on the ground with 2" of water in them. I often turn clay pots upside down and put a clay saucer on top for water. Keep the water CLEAN and shallow, maybe even adding a rock in the center for birds to stand on.

Thanks for the feeding tip! We do keep our bird bath up to snuff, so hopefully with the addition of the right food mix we'll enjoy birds in our own backyard soon!
