Comments (5)Please see the link below for my new post that I ask about tile size & what I should do after my visit at Lowe's today. Thank you Laurie for your kind words on my little Skeeter. He is so used to seeing me put tiles on the floor that he just pretends I am not looking at tiles again. :) I agree that going with a big company that will stand behind their installation may be good for me. I guess after writing the long post in the link below about tile size and my results of the Lowe's visit, any of the decisions will not be bad and I want to decide what to do by tomorrow so I can hire an installer and get this job done already. I also would love it if I found someone that was good at using the Epoxy grout since to not have the grout sealed for 1 week may not be that great if my little Skeeter misses the puppy pad that I keep in the middle foyer for him in case I am busy and do not have time to take him outside in the backyard. He is on Phenobarbital for his seizures and has to pee very frequently lately. Here is a link that might be useful: New post I set up for the tile size question & what I should do......See Morenew home purchased with kitchen help needed
Comments (15)As others have noted, move in, and do those things you have to do before you put down your furniture, first. If anything. You can stain around your appliances when the time comes. Live with anything cosmetic for awhile. Or, for fun, just change out the drawer and cabinet handles and pulls. In my last home, I knew immediately I wanted to paint away all the grey. I took time to settle in and decide what rooms would be what color. Over time, probably three years, I painted those rooms. I knew I wanted to paint my kitchen to be more cheerful (it faced north east, with a steep hill to the east) as it was always dark. I didn't get around to it for a year. (15 years later I decided it still wasn't cheerful enough, and went to a "tequila sunrise" theme -- I should have remodeled but I'd by that point bought the land up here that I eventually built on, and decided not to, as any useful remodel would have bumped out the house and into that hill, costing $$$ I was saving for this house...) Take your time to decide if you want neutral, bold, something in between. Yes, a darker stain on those kitchen cabs will look good, but take your time to decide -- maybe you'll want to make some non-cosmetic modifications when you've lived there a bit. You don't want to do this twice in a short period of time!!! Moving is stress... relax! Periodically collect samples but don't decide now. Comments (7)Dear Kiwi13, You have an architectural floor plan. Contact the architect or builder (if this was a spec home) and ask them which direction the ceiling framing runs in the Family Room and Living Room. In most cases the first floor ceiling framing will be run in the direction of the shortest span. In English your first floor ceiling framing probably runs from front to the back of your home.Meaning you should be able to remove either wall once you confirm the ceiling framing direction. If you are like the majority of home owners and not going to keep a formal living room, because you just never use it. You may want to consider reconfiguring that whole area of your new home. So you can get the family room and kitchen you truly want and expect, and that new, different, easier, better life you hope this new home will deliver for you. Tons of possibilities if you reconfigure the family room, kitchen/breakfast room, and living room area, you may not want to take out a wall as much as move one. Keep a family room and kitchen which you want. And add an informal dining room (breakfast area is a little tight), office, study, library whatever you need? The kitchen you have now I believe is just too small for the size of this home and awkward. Like it doesn't belong to this home. I can’t imagine that the realtors wouldn’t help you answer this simple question, especially if this is all it will take to sell this home. Hope this has been helpful. Comments (50)We moved into our forever home last year. The kitchen and bath cabinets and layouts were the one of the things that didn't really work for us. the first thing we did was change the cabinet hardware and wall colors in the whole house. First step in making it better. We now like the kitchen layout and cabinets, they grew on us. The added expense of changing everything wasn't worth it to us. And we are okay with that. Just saying this to be another voice to live with it for awhile. Put the color you love on the wall instead of the cabinets and decorate with it. If you decide in a while you need to change the expensive things, you will have had time to figure out what works and what doesn't in its current layout. And already have the things to coordonate with it. I think the flooring and countertop would look nice with navy walls and copper accents. I would forget the sink. but it is your house. do what will make you happy. We still plan on changing the master bath/closet/laundry area of our home. But adding a garage comes before that. Priorities. Have fun making your new house your home....See More- 2 years ago
