Orange, Blue and White Deliver a Retro-Cool Kitchen
Taking down walls helps connect this space to a breakfast nook and frees up room for a large island
After: Designer Ayelet Mendelovich rethought the space and opened it up to the adjacent breakfast nook. Most major appliances except for the refrigerator stayed in place. Taking down walls enabled the design team to make the room feel much bigger and put in a large island.

A built-in custom bench provides extra seating and storage, so the clients no longer need to run down to the garage for paper towels. A custom bar cabinet and floating shelves give spots for entertaining.

As they hoped, the homeowners now are able to wash dishes while they watch TV and interact with their friends in the living room. Wood floors now are found in both areas; before, the kitchen was covered in white tiles, creating more of a choppy look.
Custom cabinetry mixes deep blue and bright white. Vivid orange accent walls hint at the vintage and retro looks and tones in other areas of the house.
Push-and-pull drawers hide small appliances and minimize clutter while maximizing countertop space.

Subtle geometric designs include a zig-zag wine cubby near the upper cabinets and a porcelain field tile backsplash. Linear hardware gives an industrial look that’s fresh, clean and cool.

Before: A retro, two-story home in San Francisco offered style in some areas but not much in the kitchen, where the room was dark, cramped and cut off from the entertaining areas.
The room was semi-attached to a great room, but a partition wall gave the cooking space a very removed feel that cut off the homeowners from the breakfast nook.
