Hi Aunty MM!

I just received an email from his vet and she said his blood work looks good, from our visit last Thursday.

This is what she wrote: "The proBNP says it suspects clinically significant heart disease is not likely present at this time. This is good.

I will see Dr. Renee late next week. I already have a note into her to discuss the surgery with her and the team so we are prepared. As soon as we are ready to book, I will reach out. It seems we are a "go". :)

So when I know......you'll all know!!!

He's just such a picky and very light eater. I get very frustrated with him. He weighs 5.6kg, about 12 lbs. That sounds like a lot, but I feel his backbone and he's not eating much at all. I picked up some super-tasty? pate cat food at the pet store, and even some kitten pate, hoping to tempt his palette.

But, here he is!!

He likes waking me up at 5 am with a soft touch on my arm or hand, to be petted. The other morning I was startled awake when something soft and furry touched my nose. It was the only thing visible out of the covers. It was Elliott. :-)

This morning I went into the bedroom and there was a big lump under the comforter. Roxie used to do the exact same thing. What's with long-haired cats being cold?? LOL

I have been slowly loseing faith in gardenweb over the last few months, after getting in arguments about people rleasing farm animals into the wild and people feeding cats and letting them outdoors I've become pretty pesemistic about gardeners as a group of people, but this thread is so fantastic to find that I just swell up with hapiness at reading it. Regarding birds, many people underestimate there importance, birds are invaluable to us because they are resposible for spreading the forests. They spread seeds from mullberries and cherries andapples and pears and all sorts of fruit trees providing a source of food for us to use if we really need to, and they also spread nonfruiting seeds as well, and those grow into trees and bushes too, soaking carbon dioxide up from the air and providing a fuel source should we need it. anyways back to the main topic. Rhubarb makes agreat foundation planting, the heat off the house can lead to a very early harvest and it can be a great source of food to restore dwindleing winter stocks fast. Strawberries can be laid out in curving rows below bushes to form attractive plantings. Cherry trees are often fantastically ornamental in spring, and blueberries provide a bit of winter interest. Scarlet runner beans produce well as a green screen covering the south sides of houses in spring and fall. Grapes hardy Kiwi and Hops (I know, its more of a spice, but beer is important too dagummit) can also provide great shade in the summer, even shade for two storry houses roofs. in the hot summer months peas can be grown in shade in many locations. Man flowers are themselves edible; Nasturtiums are completely edible, leaves and all; roses not only produce edible hips but the petals are edible aswell, if you are careful you can harvest the petals first and the hips later; Violas and Pansies are edibe; Marigolds are edible aswell and offer a significant degree of protection from nematodes in the soil that attack tom's and pots. Garlic, Chives, Leeks, and Onions are also easy to grow and provide a degree of protection, and these can be easily fit into corners of a garden. there are also medicinals to be grown, given the right kind of wood/grain medium mushrooms can be grown anywere, even in your root cellar. You can grow your own digitalis if you use it, untill not too long ago digitalis was issued from pharmacies in leaf form (fox glove) although some effort would need to be put into regulating the doseage. Asparagus is another early season producer, goes well planted along fence rows. and there are a miriad of great trees to choose for an orchard, some plants will even atract deer and squirels, which are edible aswell. Animals also fit into this story, guinea fowl and muscovy ducks provide eggs and pest controll. Sheep are an excilent way to keep a lawn trimmed (especially cosidering that the entire reason that lawns were developed was to mimic the look of sheep pastures.) if you have an acre or two of pasture land you can consider alpacas for wool rather than sheep, or if food is more interesting to you dexter miniature cattle produce more milk for there wieght than any other cow, a very high cream content aswell. I tend to dislike goats because billies will spoil the milk and they will strip the bark off of your trees. There are just so many things to talk about, I wish I could cram them all in. oh, rooftop gardening is a great place to go too, No deer or rabits to eat your hard work, Wyat Erp (sp?) grew veggies on his roof top when he lived here in AK to keep them out of the mooses stomach. and it really does keep your house warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Kathy, I noticed your heart and soul ;) Yep, Pagan, that's the way my pain has been since I stopped work, and it causes one to feel a tad lazy, no? Infuriating, although some days it's nice. I'd much rather be able to do what I like rather than be run by a body part [dunno, let's ask the boss if she'll let me do that...Mme Back, please, just this once?] On an odd note, I stumbled and cut my hand, 4 hrs later it was still bleeding so went and got stitches at Doc In The Box. Had a nice day with a pal... got home and kicked a hidden glass bottle in the ditch and said "Ick, lots more blood but NO WAY am I going to get stitches twice in one day." Course I ended up going the next day, when I couldn't get stitches [surgistrips are fine] because I cut a nerve [hurt a nerve? nerves? whatever - cutaneous, pfft]. It's no medical biggie and nothing to be done 'bout it, but 2 toes are numb [totally moveable tho] and on the other side of the wound is a panic button - ie, brush it and see me scream and jump with shooting nerve kajeebies!! That'll stick around several months he said. Now to find shoes that cooperate and teach The Pack the command "Watch the FOOT!" I gave everyone a great laugh with the coincidence, in any case. The next day we were all trying to keep me away from any sharp object that might come try to attack me since it was apparently a Gimme an Open Wound spell ;)

New to Hoya world, need advice...

Hi Tanya, and welcome to the official club of Hoya addicts! Hoya lacunosa is a good one to start with, assuming it's a good healthy plant. No, there's not much chance it'll grow enough to go into a 10" pot by summer's end. Lacunosa is a small-leaved Hoya and takes a long, long time to get that large. If you had ordered about 5 of those, you could have combined them and put them in a 10" pot, but I still probably would have suggested you put some packing peanuts in the bottom of the pot to fill some of the space... You can find full-sized lacunosas at some of the big box stores. I see them all the time at Lowes and HD, in 8-10" pots. That's where I got mine, which is in an 8" pot, and my mom has one in a 10" pot. When they're young like yours, you can typically figure on moving them up once every year or two into a 1" larger pot until they're full-sized. Denise in Omaha

So it was stable, until it wasn't stable, for the reason I just gave. I win. LOL That stealthy lubadub seems to have gone *poof*, I'd consult with him before even conceding Love-15 since he is more fun than me LOL! I think in order to judge the merits of "Big Zac F1" as a cultivar; we need to compare opinions on what constitutes a cultivar. It can be subjective and perhaps with heirlooms much more so, but now we are asking about traits that result from inbred parent lines. That the seeds were an F1 cross certainly is reasonable acknowledgment. However, anecdotal reports of “Minnie’s friends” are not sufficient proof IMO, that Big Zac F1 ever was a hybrid cultivar. To know that for sure, IMHO, we would have to have a record of the breeding of both parents to form stable inbred parent lines such that when crossed they always gave a vigorous seed and always had the same combination of characteristics to clearly define the seed plant characteristics every time in terms of its characteristics not limited to consistent fused blossoming and vigor. Porterhouse is probably a good example of a hybrid in this sense. If you mean to say that our heronie Ms. Zaccaria worked on both parent lines and Big Zac F1 was not drifting this or that way then I'll readily concede in straight sets. I vaguely recall as an armchair blabbing analyst who was off somewhere in the tropical jungles when this whole thing went down, a somewhat different version: That she simply crossed two heirlooms and used that as her F1 and little by little improved it, which I assume was via the parent lines. I would need more than a a few friends waving their arms calling this a quality F1 hybrid that always performed "the same" There is a limit to how much "in-variety genetic diversity" there can be, and everything may not be recognized as a cull when this is done in a home garden. At some point you need to say the genetic diversity did not justify calling it a stable F1 hybrid, and you are just dealing with a cross. Dealing with a cross is great, but the decision to name a variety is subjective and I'm sure plenty of varieties have been named that had parents that later were show not to breed true. The scandal of losing a parent to me is highly suspicious and the loss is hearsay which may or may not be relevant or true. To be honest, after watching the passion with which giant tomato growers behold their seeds like Smeagol's "My Precious", given the nature of the egos in the competition, my only conclusion is that Big Zac F1 was simply a cross between two heirloom lines which had a higher frequency of expression of fused blossoms. I wonder if it is more accurate that Ms. Zaccaria discovered and should be credited with a higher frequency of fused blossoms, possibly a mutation, possibly not, which was still quite variable and requires significant resources to achieve the heterosis and uniformity a quality hybrid needs to give. New breeding has probably advanced BZ (OP) well beyond the F1 from what we are seeing, and they still do not consider it stable (Unless the F* from Monsieur Boudyo has reached that point for a single specific trait). I may have different thinking, since I also believe if the mutation is fixed and a consistent tomato producing multiple fruits is bred, that the new stable cultivar should be the beginning of as new subspecies at minimum recognized as different as broccoli is from cauliflower. Perhaps when my great heirloom book arrives in the Male (smile), I’ll have a better understanding of hybrids ;-), but these are my thoughts as all-wet as they might be. PC who really wants to ask a question about the systemic or not characteristics of initial Leaf Mold (whimper, frown) when I get up the guts to start another thread. and also subscribes to the academy of "it isn't how big it is but how well it eats" though still finding this fascinating in other people's gardens. I wish I could give you my cats' appetites especially the Maine Coon who eats like a pig. When he was shaved and given a wellness check a few weeks ago, a message to me was he could stand to lose some weight at 26 pounds!

Thanks, Jasdip, for this little update. Sounds like Elliott is doing well. Their finickyness knows no bounds. I don't know too many cats (except Lily's apparently LOL) who don't either go through phases or demand changes frequently to the point of madness.

The vet's report is encouraging. I look forward to hearing about him again soon.

PS I have had a few cats and the only one that ever loved his food was an orange cat, Rico, who loved Tender Vittles. I don't think they even make those anymore. He ate them faithfully for years. He lived to be 19 years old! I have no suggestions on what to try. Good luck with that issue. :) Give him a sweet pat for me.

I few years ago I was buying my monsters canned food. I was just standing there staring. Another lady was just standing there staring. She finally says "I wonder what they'll refuse to eat this week that they loved last week." We both burst out laughing, made our choices and went on our way.

My daughter's Siamese cats are super finicky too and she was ecstatic when she tried some of Trader Joe's canned cat food and they both LIKED it. I love the above meme. So true. Mine always eat the dry Purina ONE with Salmon but will turn their nose up at can pate. They love grilled or flaked Fancy Feast especially if there is gravy. This made it quite difficult when the supply chain had empty canned food shelves but for the past two weeks, they began slowly getting them.

Elliott is the first cat I've ever had who doesn't eat thru the nite. I put some in his bowl hoping that he'd eat it and it's always there in the morning. Right now there's canned people tuna on a plate, and his palatable chicken pate in his bowl that I bought yesterday. He wants none of it.

A friend reached out to me wondering if I was ready to have a cat in my life, she knows of one. She misses seeing Bud. I told her about Elliott, and frankly I'm tempted. I've wasted so much cat food with this dude, at least it wouldn't go to waste with a second cat.

Yes, Jasdip, the waste is terrible with a finicky pet. We had an orange cat who was so picky, but she did eat Fancy Feast. She weighed 6-7 pounds, and I was embarrassed to take her out of the carrier at the vet. Not sure why she was such a poor eater, and we never did put any weight on her.

Most cats enjoy having a buddy to hang out with...but not all. Elliott may eat better once his mouth feels better.

That's a good point. It might be better until he's 100% then decide if another will be a good thing. I know that having two dogs made Carmelita a lot less finicky eater but Fred is gone so she does what she wants now.

I'm so glad to hear Elliott's on the mend!

My currently less skittish cat can go for a long periods of time without eating when she's very nervous. When the other cat is in the house it makes her nervous.

You might try the other cat, just realized it might not go great. I have a feeling Elliott has never been an alpha cat. I hope you can wait! ❤️

About wasted food .. a friend has a very spoiled cat that is very finicky with food. She freezes the food her cat won't eat and gives it to a person with numerous cats in her care and they gobble it up. At least the food is not going to waste.

HTC I do have food in the freezer that he won't eat. I took one out today and he wants no part of it. I have given food to the lady who lives below me but she's almost in the same boat I am with her two. We've been trading food back and forth for a while now, when her cats are fussy too. She moved out today :(
